You make up a directory for your site which must hold everything that the site needs to run.
Then divide up your site into manageable pieces with a directory for the navigation - dir. for graphics, you get the idea. What you must have is the index (home) page at the top of the tree right under the root site directory.

If the site is simple, a static site, no email forms or interactive then all you need is the address of your storage area and as Simon states this is normally ftp. You also need a user name and password to log into that site so that you can upload.

Simon has made a good recommendation with Smart another you may look at is Wise. There are many ftp trnsfer software available some free and some costing pennies. Do buy a book if you are going to start making a web site as you will save a huge amount of time rather than looking at tuts. on the web.
