I think the watermarking came about because some unscrupulous people took graphics and claimed them as their own. Watermarking and copyright seem to go hand in hand.
There has been such a todo over copyright in the last year or two, that this is the end result. There really is no safe way to protect your work.
I use Digimarc, which does not leave a visible watermark, but tracking down images and then doing something about the offender, takes precious time and money!
Tutorial makers spend a lot of time and effort in creating and sharing their knowledge. And, we, the end users, should be respectful of their desire to protect their work in whatever manner they choose.
I do agree with you, Carolyn, that it spoils the final image. There has to be a better way!
