I have to buy a new scanner. Does anyone know and uses the EPSON PERFECTION 1640SU/PHOTO?

I'm interested because I can scan negatives and slides with it (any experiences with this?) and also because I get Photoshop limited edition with it, which might make an upgrade to the real one by the end of the year more affordable.

I re-read the thread on descreening by Klaus, and, like him, I'm not so keen on the so-called "intelligent" software. So my question is: to what degree can I adjust things myself?
