    two separate shapes.

Duplicate the bottom shape to bring it to the top.

Select the portion you want to come to the top and draw a shape (the circle) around it.

Arrange > Combine Shapes... Intersect Shapes.

This deletes everything except the section under the shape (shown in orange).

    This help?

(Your English is very good. Please do not worry :-)

The technique that Gary illustrated works really well and I've used it many times. However, if your image gets too complex and you try to cut it as Gary suggest you can get odd things happening, especially if your using outlines. If this happens then what you can use instead is a "clipview" on the object. Otherwise the technique is the same.

    Good luck,

    Good to see you :-)

If your image has lines you can always convert the lines to shapes and then they behave better if you use combine shapes... intersect shapes.

    Glad to help Kasem.

    ----------------------------

Good to be here Gary. I come by every so often usually just looking, not posting. Been stretched 20 different ways and not spending enough time illustrating I fear.

I do have a bit of a question though. Do you prefer cutting the shape for a particular reason? Or dislike the clip view? Just currious. I've had a number of problems with cutting complex shapes which has forced me to use clipview often. Of course, the implamentation of clipview isn't the best either and I've had more than a few issues with it (basically its a bit clunky).

Anyway, just wondering your thoughts on that.

If you run into problems using Xara's Combine Shapes path commands, try this:

Convert the problem area into a bitmap, and apply the combine shapes function to the bitmap.

Apply Clipview works fine as well and maintains the vector images if you are concerned with creating a scalable image.
