Op Art is Fun!

Jonathan Payne recently posted a link to a site featuring the work of Op Art artist Bridget Riley. Unfortunately the site has many many graphics on a single page - but I do think it is worth the wait! If you are patient here's the link. I found Ms. Riley's work to really get the creative juices flowing with regards to the potential of using Xara to create Op Art designs.

Below is my first attempt. It is simple but I'm happy with how it turned out. I hope others will also post their own Op Art designs. They are fun.

Op Art was all the rage when I was attending Art Center in the 60's. Bridgit never used slick gradient fills though :-)

Gary I particularly like your spherical example.

After playing with these and seeing how easy they are to create in Xara, my thoughts go to Bridget and how technically difficult it must have been for her without computer aid.

My third experiment seems to have white lines in it but there aren't any. Not trusting my eyes, I used Xara's eyedropper colour selector to analyze the image. It confirmed that the spaces between the black lines are consistantly white and that the 'whiter' lines that appear are an optical illusion.

Another optical illusion is that the straight vertical lines don't look so straight. The image is comprised of concentric circles and straight lines only.

You know Ross, this technique (the one directly above this posting) may serve as useful way to convey reflections or shadows on surfaces as an alternative to overlays of transparent objects, feathering, etc.

I would be interesting to see what basics techinques could be compiled.

I don't know what seed of an idea you planted in your head. I do hope it will sprout and grow something interesting. (There are no seeds in mine - just rocks [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img] ).

I recently saw pics of the Beaverton City Library. It looked like a wonderful building. Been there? I also have a friend who lives at the other Beaverton - Beaverton, Ontario, Canada. While yours may be the "City of Trees" his still has beavers. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Yes, I've seen it a lot lately. I did not even know the library project was underway until last summer when I took an alternative route home from work.

Close by (approx. 2 miles), is also the Nike campus. Have you ever seen anything on it? Pools, printed pictures of "their" athletes on 3-story screens, landscaped berms along the campus perimeter, etc. Its quite a statement by Phil Knight (sp?). And believe it or not, there is a "wetland" area across the street. I remember seeing beaver damns there 2 or 3 years ago.

If I have sometime during the holidays, I'll play around using the OP art on a surface.

Finally, a thread where non-artists may contribute.
I did a lot of playing around with transparency profiles and moulds.

Some pretty weird stuff came out this way, like the "four pringles" here.
