    ok, heres what i am trying to do. i have an object, lets say a circle...i want to fill it with a pattern of my choice, not just a specific color. how do i do this?

    If you mean a repeating tiled pattern, maybe you could look at the tutorials here:

    If it's an image or design you want filling the circle, you'd be interested in masking.

    Filling a shape with another image is quickly achieved by grouping.

    Just add the image to the layers palette above the shape to be filled (the shape should be on a transparent background and have a solid fill). Group the image layer to the shape layer by "alt clicking" between the two layers.
