Not enough ram

I just got a new system, and am now running Win XP with 512 megs ram. I installed my Photoshop 4 on it and it won't open, it says "Cannot open not enough memory (ram)"
It worked just fine in Win 98SE.

Is there a solution for this?
I'm not that big of a PS usere mostly I use it for scanning and adjusting "curves"

Hi Judi, This might work, in XP programs, accessories, run the program compatibility wizard to see if it can fix the problem.

I ran the compatibility program , trying different settings and got the message "Unable to load PSUT9532.DLL Photoshop will not be able to support 16 bit plug-ins. Continue?" I said yes and got the same memory error message

Judi i also run PS on WinXP Pro w/512 ram. And i've never had any problems with it, let alone one like yours.

Albeit i'm using PS7, which is actually much more of a resource hog than 4 ever was... but i don't think that has anything to do with this problem.

If you're familiar with WinXP at all, i'd suggest you checkout your Swap file setting. See what size it's set to be.

Right-click 'My Computer'.
Choose 'Properties'.
Click the 'Advanced' tab.
Click the 'Settings' button in the 'Performance' section.
Click the 'Advanced' tab at the very top.
Now look to the bottom of the current window. The amount shown there is your current Windows Swap file size.

Are you running PS on the same drive that your OS is installed? If so, that can cause some memory issues with the program. You need to setup PS to use a different drive for it's scratch disk.

One last stab for ya... you can assign PS to "Run" in a specific "Compatibility mode".
First make sure PS is not running.
Then find the "Photoshp.exe" file in your Adobe/Photoshop folder. Right-click on it and choose "Properties". Click the "Compatibility" tab, top-right. Then choose your previous OS that you know worked for you, from the menu within the "Compatibility mode" section.
Click OK.

If none of this is helps the issue, i'd suggest a clean unInstall and reInstall.

Hello Judi,

According to Adobe version 4 won't run on XP. I was also still using version 4 when I got a XP machine. The solution is to upgrade to version 7. If you do you won't be sorry...If nothing else it is worth it for the healing brush tool, particularly if you're retouching photographs.
