Here's my attempt...

If I exported the image with anti-aliasing ON, there were faint red outlines on the small, top-level segments. Nothing I tried got rid of them except reducing the quality slider one notch (turning OFF anti-aliasing).

What is the secret?

OK, can some of you more-talented people enlighten a simple-minded folk such as myself? I'd like to know the best way to go about creating the intertwined Olympic rings shown here.

This may not be the most elegant solution, but it was very quick to create and the illusion works.
First create your 5 rings from left to right.. blue, yellow, black, green, then red. Position them in the olympic logo. Then create the shapes you see across the parts that need to overlap. First with the blue ring, clone it, then shift select the shape under it and apply clipview. Remove the shape's outline. Do the other three the same way and there you have it.
