Attached is an mht file...and all-in-one HTML document.

Ivan Louette, moderator of the XARA X forum graciously allowed me to post his highly visual techniques for creating gels and glasses. Because we use these textures all the time, I thought this would be a good post for our forum, for those occasions where the 3D program isn't a solution for a texture.

Further, Ivan sez he will answer any and all questions on this tutorial.

I wish I had something to share with Ivan!

It's all one big party and we're all in little cloisters. I think we'd benefit from mingling a little more.

Ivan uses 3D software too, so he is the perfect linking person with that other forum.

While studying my C4D manual, I saw an image on Booleans, and the thought crossed my mind that I could do this also with drawing software.

This is the result. In fact: it is more a question af analysing the problem than of meticulous drawing. The perspective has to be done manually, and the cut-out shape is in fact a triangle with round- instead of straight lines. Place this on top on the corner of the cube, add some fills, and you're there.

In fact: there is a great resemblance between 2D drawing with vectors and 3D. Not only the splines, but also the subdivision surfaces bear a strong resemblance in technique with vector drawing. Also the "convert to editable shapes" command appears in both.

Of course, I can only speak of the infinitely small part of C4DArt that I read, and tried out, but it will probably work the same way in the other software too.

    Hi Ivan and all--

Ivan's complete file came in at 344K, which is 44K larger than this site allows.

Ivan, if you can provide a link to your page for the #D crowd here, it would be worth their while. And users...you should definely download Ivan's .XAR files that show how the liquids are done.

    Sorry again,

I haven't tried this out, but 3D folks, try this link:

    Hi Erik--

I switch off between XARA and my modeling programs frequently, depending upon the level of complexity an image requires. To those who say, "Yes, but you are locked into a single pose with a drawing program", I say, "Yes, but if the clouds are wrong or something in a rendering of a model, or if the client wants the model modified, ya still got wasted time there."

The secret to Life is knowing the path of least futility toward your goal.

Kindest Regards, and you tell me this doesn't look like a simple model with a plastic texture...

like they said in ancient China:

"People fall over cobblestones. Never over mountains."

Beautiful image you made there. Some people can paint more realistically than a camera. (Raphael, Ingres). Because they discovered that a human being has two eyes that see the same image from a slightly different position.

By the way: I just ordered your book on Photoshop. If it is what my intuition tells me, it'll go much deeper than Photoshop. And thanks for the knowledge you share on your new site.

If you don't work against time, time often works for you.

It amazes me the talent that people have to draw in "3D". That is one on the reasons I have started using 3D software. I could never get my drawings to look good. I could never get the colors smoothly blended.

    Great job Gary, and Ivan.

    Hi Randy--

At the risk of sounding like an evangelist, I could not draw my 3D stuff without using XARA. It's the only program that enables you to work on an object in the workspace, instead of in a proxy/preview window like Illustrator does.

In modeling, it's the same thing---ya want your hands on the piece---manipulating it---and not working in some stupid proxy window that's inherently inaccurate.
