Is anyone aware of any type of font manager for PS that allows you to see a preview of the font in the drop down menu? Kinda like Fireworks's drop down menu.

Type your text, select it, press CTRL+H to hide selection, click in the font box, so that the font's name inside that box turns blue and use your cursor keys to scroll through the different fonts. If your image has no scrollbars, you can also use the mouse scroll. This is the only method in Photoshop to preview your fonts.

    Gaussian is right.
Outside PS you have (amongst others) Adobe Font Manager (free and Deluxe) and Extensis Suitcase which allow you to work with Type1 and OpenType fonts.
There is also the Bitstream Font Navigator which you get (got) for free with the CorelDRAW suite.

A very good font manager that you can use is Typograph:

    http://www.neuber.com/typograph/

It is the only manager I came across that can view that many different fonts.

    I quote their website:

"Display all OpenType, TrueType and Type 1 fonts on hard disks, DVD, CD, opticals, floppies or particular folders including all sub folders. Sorts viewed fonts by name, file, family, copyright, width, date, size.
    Typograf displays following font types:
OpenType and TrueType fonts (preview, installed, loaded by Typograf)
PostScript Type 1 fonts (preview, installed, loaded by Typograf) - free ATM Light required
    Printer fonts
Raster or bitmap fonts (system fonts)"
