Here's a new poster I'm finishing this weekend for our drama department's latest original show. It's about a reporter who was murdered in Canton, Ohio in 1925 (my hometown) The majority of this was done in PS, I figured I'd get the fastest, easiest results for the effect I wanted to achieve. But the title design was done in xara then imported into PS to give the worn look on it. I will also be adding times, dates, and ticket prices later in xara, but I wanted some criticism before I do that! thanks a lot!

Very Nice..

Steve. I like the overall 'feel' of the
elements...the epoch that it portrays.
You know, I thought that was an old lead type
printing slug. The engraved kind set on
a block of wood. I guess I took the light
color around his head to be the lead showing
around. Anyway, it's just what my eyes told
mind at the moment. As poster is supposed to
be informative in it's message etc. It does
that. With time, date & place...I'm sure it
will be a great piece.

Hi Steve,

I like the aged look. It reminds me of some old newspaper clippings I found in my grandmother's attic.

Two things I'm curious about; the outline (halo) around the man's picture, and the ellipses in the lower left of the image.

The outline looks nice, but I wonder what it is. The ellipses are a nice contrast to the sepia tone, but again I wonder what they are. This adds to the mystery of the murdyr for me.

I made a smaller pic, I didn't realize how large it was before! So, just so you can see what it'll look like posted on a wall.

In the mean time I'll try to find a better way of incorporating blood into the design. I don't want it to be morbid or anything, just a contrast and showing it was a murder. So i made it as 'elegant' as blood can be, but I'll try again! Thanks for the tips

Steve maybe you could get rid of the halo effect by drawing around the person in Xara and cutting it out, then go back and re-insert a sepia background.

The blood really doesn't look all that bloody. Even if it is fresh part of it still would have soaked in along the edges. You might even try a little more of a "splat" effect.

the lettering you use could be bloody. I still think blood drops/puddle in the image could work with the drops relocated and deeper in colour.

Your aged/scorched paper look is wonderful. Was fire involved in the murder? Is there any potential to include some suggestion of the muder weapon --- say a couple of bullets or a crowbar in the shadows if appropriate. Anyways that's just a thought.

Oh! Why is Murder spelled that way?

but I'm with Judi, the blood is not right. It looks a little bit more like a gum drop to me, cherry, my favorite!!

It's not being morbid to get your elements right. If you see that poster as being splattered with a few drops of blood then get a little dirty man.

Soak it a little. Like Judi mentioned, paper absorbs so stain it and then have a few of various sizes surrounding the larger drop for a little realizm. Usually if there's one drop there's bound to be others around!!

This might sound gross to you but take a dollup of ketchup, water it down, very slightly, a touch more liquidy but not too runny and then drop it onto a piece of paper and wait a minute. You will see little droplets and a soaking thing going on. I think a pretty good model for you, no??

I do like the over all image though. Love the old newspaper effect, very nice indeed!!

is not always Xara. However I think in this case you could have recreated the effect pretty easily in Xara.

But it is always good to see how the other aps work :-)

Well, the outline of the portrait was part of the original photo, it's the best picture I could find of Mellett! And the 'ellipses' are supposed to be blood drops... hmmmm! Thanks for the comments, if you can't make it out, or anyone else can't, let me know so I can do something about it!
