Doh or grrr? MX and ActionScript

The attached is a cut-down version of something I am working on. Click on 'Georgian'. Why is the third blob black?

Actions/XML loads the XML file.

Palette1/P1Swatches should pick up the three globals: _root["swatch1x1Color"] etc. The next lines assign these to the three blobs. There is a problem with 1x1 and 1x2 but 1x3 appears to work as a colour. It applies fine to two of the swatches but not the third. Can anyone spot why not? swatch1x3 seems to be a problem - are there two of them? I hoped cutting down the file would find it but it didn't. Renaming it to be swatch1-4 solves it but why?????

but if I reassign the variable in the Palette layer:

p1s1Col = _root["p1s1Color"];

and then use this new variable, it works fine.

Do tell me why!!!!
