How about long skinny rectangles with linear gradient fills, arranged in a row? It really depends on what picture you're making.

They have tutorials on something like this on some Photoshop-related sites. I don't know which ones but, you could try PhotoshopCafe.com.

They hava a tutorial section in the forums that list sites that have PS Tutorials.
