Good morning to 2002 and all of you,

I've just posted a new Challenge in the Painter Forum at In Depth Discussions.. a Kaleidoscope Challenge. Whether you'd like to join us there or maybe do the challenge here.. you're most welcome to participate in the fun.

The Kaleidoscope plugin is in all Painter versions from Painter 5 through Painter 7 (and maybe in earlier versions as well, though not in Painter Classic). You'll find it in the Objects palette and depending on your Painter version, in either the P.Float section, Dynamic Layers section, or in Painter 7 in the Layers section (the icon that looks like a plug).

It's an easy feature to use and it can be a lot of fun. The image displayed below is an example of many I've done that came out of a RIFF file I've been fiddling with for months. It has a zillion Layers and Kaleidoscope Layers and I keep finding new combinations. I'm afraid the poor file will burst if I don't quit.

To describe my process in a nutshell, I began the image by painting on Painter 7 Water Color Layers using one of my Custom Water Color Brush Variants, "WCDryCamel-antique-pool.xml" that's available for download along with a sample image to give you an idea of the brush strokes that are possible using it. Click the link named "Painter 7 Custom Water Color Brushes Contributed by Friends in the Painter Community at:

I used multiple Kaleidoscope Layers and Default Layers; patched pieces onto the top, bottom, and sides by copying, mirroring, and rotating so those parts weren't cut off; duplicated Layers and used Mask editing; applied Composite Methods; then finished the image off using the new Painter 7 Serigraphy Effect and added my copyright notice and logo.

I hope you like it and even if you don't, you'll try the Kaleidoscope plugin. It can be addictive and it's always surprising how much can be done using it over an image or painting, with or without multiple Layers/Kaleidoscope Layers as long as there's enough contrast and detail to make it interesting. Experiment 'til you find something you like.

Happy New Year!

Jinny Brown

It looks like maybe it is made of copper with the green patina coming through maybe an enameled surface.

I love playing with the kaleidoscope plug in, it's more fun than computer games.

Here are two of my favorites. I wish I could have them made into ceramic tiles, but do not know where to go to have it done.

Judi,

Your tiles are very pretty and do look like ceramic. I'll bet with a little research you could find the supplies and paint the tiles yourself, then have them fired.. or whatever the process is.

They'd be really beautiful!

Thanks for participating... and it's good to know others get hooked on Kaleidoscoping too.

Here are mine:
http://www.speedsite.com/~lafolli/im...ngepurple2.jpg
and
http://www.speedsite.com/~lafolli/im...ngepurple3.jpg

They were both done with the same image as a background, I just floated it under the kaleidoscope layer and scooted it around the canvas until I found some patterns I liked. I like to think of these as kinda like Mandalas... they look an awful lot like them anyway. I had never played with the plugin much before tho and never realized how much fun it was. Great topic, Jinny!

**edit** sorry about the image size... I forgot my image was so big... I'll fix it anon.

lafolli,

I'm happy to hear you like the Kaleidoscope idea. It is fun and addictive.

Even if you and others don't want to participate in the Challenge there, you might enjoy seeing what the Painter Forum members at In Depth Discussions have done. They are having a great time with it and posting a lot of great images.

I've looked at your orangepurple2.jpg and it's great. Will take a look at the second one after posting this message.

Thanks for participating!
