ok guys,
just developed another **NEW** product.
Instead of using 2 objects for salt and pepper, I developed one object containing a combined salt and pepper shaker.
'The Bow' will be filled from the bottom - there is a hidden screw in each leg. The holes for the salt point to the left, for pepper to the right (or vice versa, depending on your point of view). There is a divider in the tube (very simple production process btw - no welding, no soldering, just a nice little trick :-)) ).
if you can read the 'S', you'll use salt, if you can read 'P' you'll use pepper.
Simple and straightforward product development solution! And - of course - another very elegant object for the dinner or breakfast table.
Pls don't copy it...I guess my manufacturer will run crazy if I am going to tell him to register another patent :-)

...but don't the salt and pepper fall/run out when you re-fill? You said the re-filling holes are in the bottom of the design, meaning you have to keep it upside-down when you refill... and that means you have the holes pointing downwards and the stuff goes out at the same time you try to refill!?
But the design looks great!
BTW, did you have a 3D modell you "traced" or did you create the whole thing in Xara? The reflections look really great!

Basically you are right. BUT... :-) lets assume you want to refill salt. You hold 'The Bow', pressing your thumb over the holes, close the refill screw, turn 'The Bow', and repeat the same procedure with the pepper side.
Simple? You won't be able to refill both ends at the same time anyway, unless you will have a package that contains both materials :-))

I had a CAD model first, then used some bitmap reflections - I've spent so much time on textures and bitmaps over the past years, that one of them almost fit after lots of stretching, twisting, tweaking. It's far from being perfect (there are better texture specialists in this forum!). At least it looks good so that everybody knows what I want to illustrate...
The gold texture is just a small portion of a large bitmap, which I had to blur (Gaussian blur) before I finally reached the effect I needed. And the chrome texture or bitmap was an old one I had developed long time ago. It doesn't fit on the back end or left side, but what the heck, it's a shaker! The gold reflection on the chrome part is a seperate layer I've added on top of the chrome. Maybe I should have darkened it a bit, but now it's finished, and if made in reality it will look totally different I guess. I might give it a try in my raytracing, but that machine is so incredibly slow and there are too many routine jobs waiting for me <sigh>
Gary, thanks for posting the image -

...BUT... that will easily give "beginners" nasty surprises :-) lets assume you refill salt, pressing your thumb over the holes (leaving a nice fat fingerprint on the chrome), close the refill screw, turn, and repeat (leaving another fat fingerprint). After the turn you cover the pepper holes, but leaving the salt holes uncovered, and the salt pours out (I don't think you have a long and elastic thumb that cover both sets of holes, especially when they are on oppositing sides of the bow).
Oh well, I guess you notice that the salt has poured out so you just turn the bow again and refill more salt - while the pepper pour out

This cartoon was actually made with Xara (no scanning)

Paul,
the cartoon is fantastic! Yes, if you will do it this way, the mess will be perfect. However, if you nice guy will bring the bow into a position as illustrated below, it will work without tears!
BTW, the tube does have a diameter of 18mm inside - enough for lots of salt even if you consider the low fill level.
Anyway, next time I will consult you first before I start on a product development!
