I've been playing at attempts to get engraving effects in xara. I don't think the example attached was all that successful so I post it hoping someone will have a better way.

It started with a bitmap of a pencil sketch (you can see it here) that I manipulated with xara's bitmap effects. I then overlayed a couple of blends and a contour all comprised of white lines. I finished it off with a border that uses one of Ivan's brushes available for download at The great XaraXone.

Andromedia has a series of filters that can produce an steel and wood engraved look. Series 3 Filters

They work as plug-ins

Gary - I downloaded the demo of the series 3 filter plugin. It is great and seems to work well within xara. With the demo you can't see any more than a small preview window and you can't save. Bummer! The demo does give a good sense of what can be done with it and it looks very impressive. My only problem is the $99US cost. Here in Canada our money has such pretty colours I'm reluctant to part with it.

Might there be a such thing as a freeware plugin that can create engraving/etching or mizzotint effects?

Have you tried using a fractal plasma transparency on the picture. You can vary the amount of transparency, angles width of lines etc.

You could also overlay the picture with a white (or coloured or even filled) rectangle and apply the transparency to that.

The picture blow was a photo converted to grey (in Xara) and fractal transparency applied then cloned for greater depth.

If you have problems joining the extremities of my brush you can solve them in playing with precision on "spacing" or "rotation added" settings (type decimals or centesimals).

And if you will add colors (Christine too), you can superpose one or more colored or multicolor filled quadrangle(s) and apply bleach transparency to them as I said it some minutes ago to Joroho in the forum for "multicolored lines".

Kind Regards!

Even if you can't find a mezzotint filter here, try these sites for free filters:

http://mars.ark.com/~gschorno/gfo/index.html (Greg's Factory Filters)

I think that's enough for now.

Hi Ross,

I forget you can also made my spiro-brushes seemless around closed shapes in modifying the line size by decimals!
Working on that and the two brush settings above you can obtain perfect results.

(but please if you have some benefits with the false banknotes you draw, share it with me for my ideas !!!)

Regards,

ivan
