There are quite a lot of Orb tutes out there already. Here are some that I've found useful.

In general, the trick is (always) to fool the eye into seeing what you want it to see. A glossy orb is basically a circle (2D) with any combination of gradient fills and/or lighting effects applied to it, to make it look 3D
