Has anyone "imbedded" the Xara nav bars in virtual site builder? I am using the ivenue.com engine to create my website. The Ivenue platform uses "literals" to add code to existing html. i would appreciate any comments from anyone familiar w/ this topic.

John, try: www.warhoreswebsites.com. The go to build. simply populate the form and choose a business type. Take note of the login info 'cus u'll need it to ge behind the scenes.
Incidentally, what I want to do, adding the dpopdown menu, can be done in this platform. I just dont know how to do it.

    Cheers

Let's put a little calmness in!

    There are different kinds of website;

    1. Small static ones (built using whatever takes your fancy - and the newer Frontpage versions *are* better than the old ones). WS sites fall into this category.

    2. The large static sites - Dreamweaver is good for those because with templates you get consistency. You may have used WS to help design them and for building the navbars etc.

    3. Published sites - like some of the ones JR does - managed in a database and with the html generated once off - or at regular intervals.

    4. Dynamic sites eg using php/mysql in which pages are built on-the-fly when requested. This wd include a Content Management System site like Nigel is talking about. Let's face it, UBB (this bulletin board) is a sort of CMS.

    5. Perm any combination!

All these approaches are good for the right sites. My Bricks & Brass site uses 2, 3 and 4 for different areas. It is sometimes hard to keep my head around it, so testing needs care.

As with Nigel's plan, I have to keep a careful watch on paths and folders to make sure everything hangs together.

    hi Nigel,

Do you have a link to the site? I sling my own code and even dreamweaver is too limiting for what I need to do. My website building tool is wordpad. If the scripting language can handle it, or be made to handle it, then I do it. Sooo... I am a bit prejudiced against these types and even against dreamweaver.

Once you learn to paint freehand, one has trouble using a paint by numbers set, or a coloring book. If you understand my analogy.

Sorry, I am almost a complete idion when it comes to programming code. I do have Frontpage, but opted for a virtual WYSIWYG engine instead. I did not understand the word "call" as laid out in your reply to my post. I tried to determine the start and end menu script in the Frontpage "html" mode and did not see any of my links. The menu and links work fine in "preview" mode, but the code part may as well be "pigeon english" to me. I guess I thought that I should be able to see the links in html.
Incidentally, shouldn't there be some script that goes in the head and some in the body? Please help!

okay... I think I understand your problem. Is this "virtual site builder" a web site you go to and "build" your webiste? If so... then hang it up. MM will not work with this garbage. You are stuck with the template you bought.

I have some swamp mud I do not own, but will gladly sell you... for only 390 mil... Small unmarked bills please...

I am still completely lost. Lets assume for a minute that I did not have frontpage, which I must agree is not a good choice of editors. How would I be able to see the script that I would need to drop into a virtual site builder. BTW, I have saved the file which has an html and what looks like a javascript component. I can view the nav in my browsers w/o any trouble. Another question, does this file need to be published somewhere else? The nav is pulling the info off my hard drive. This doesn't help me when the site builder sits on a server somewhere else.

    Cheers

As I said, I'm not a website designer...

But 5 and 6 looks like they are done in Frontpage.

Yes, 1-4 have a quite a few pages... What is "build time"? For #2 - what do you spend 45 minutes doing in Wordpad? Wouldn't a database driven/dynamic site help you? Log on to the server, modify an entry, add an entry or page - instantly available?

Which aspect of these websites can't be done with Dreamweaver?

    Hi Risto,

How many examples do you want?

    1. (This section is presently 11MB, built 6 times a week. total build time 5 minutes)
    2. (This site is built when I get the chance presently about 23 MB, total build time 45 minutes)
    3. (same as above only smaller, total build time 5 minutes)
    4. (same as the two above only smaller in size, total build time ~30 seconds)
    5. (PERL scripts, client updates)
    6. (Perl Script store front, client Manages and maintains)

I went to ivenue.com and could not get there sample pages to work. So I have no idea about this service. Sounds like dynamic website creation and not static pages.
