I am a bit out of touch with sending work to Bureaus lately to have art work printed out. For example Leaflets and Business Cards. I want to get back into it. I use to create art work in CorelDraw and send them to the Printing Bureau on Zip disk or CD and the Bureau would always have CorelDraw (what I created the work in).

Now it has been said that Xara X is not as yet as common hense, if I created some Business Cards and Flyers or poster etc in Xara X and took it to one of a number of High Street Printers/Bureaus, would I have no trouble getting the work produced. Secondly, in connection to this: If the number of Printers/Bureaus where far and few, would it therefore be a simple case to 'Inport' the art work created in Xara X (with elements of Xara 3D maybe), into CorelDraw and have the Artwork produced that way ?????

The best bet, especially for a business card, is to create a TIFF file to the resolution your printer recommends.

Since a TIFF image is a bitmap, any shadows, fills, bevels, etc. are automatically created to pixels.

I use the formula LPI (lines per inch which is how printers specify printed output) is equal to DPI (dots (or pixels) per inch) time 2.

So if your printer is printing your business cards at 300 LPI, export your image at twice that amount or 600 DPI.

Another option is to export your art as Xara EPS (Encapsulated PostScript).

You can also create a PRN printer file which is like printing directly from Xara.

For more information on this topic check out WebXealot 26.

    Thanks Gary.

I think you were referring to printing out from one's own printer when you say, 'save at double the resolution to that of one's printer'. I was thinking of a professional printer that split the file/art-work into the four printing colours and printing, say, one thousand cards or leaflets off.

Of course one could give the BITMAP file to the Printer/Beauru, although they will still want to know what package the original artwork was created in, will they not ? When you say 'export to EPS format', do you mean export into CorelDraw ?

Thanks also for the link, I did happily get quite side-tracked with the different subjects and also with Graphics.com, with the tips and tutorials. I hope you have sorted your problem out and are able to call up graphics.com now.

Does my confusion make sense ? Maybe I am making the problem more that it really is.

I'm exporting my files as *.tif @ 600 dpi as Gary is doing it. Works great with sizes up to 3 x 4 feet. The advantage: any printing co can print a tif, they don't need the fonts, you don't have to convert the fonts to lines, no hassle at all.

Another alternative I'm using is as follows: I install a Linotronic Printer driver on my machine, with a port 'file'. The I print the document 'to file' selecting the Linotronic printer. This will create a *.ps or *.eps file, which you can open with (free) Ghostscript and GSView, a postscript interpreter. With this great utility you can perform a final check and even print your *.ps or *.eps to your bubble jet or PCL non-postscript printer. If the result is what you had in mind, you can send the file to your printing co.

Over here most printing cos import the *.eps or *.ps into Quark, PageMaker, InDesign or Illustrator and print from there. The RIP will do the rest.

    Ghostscript is available here

GSView (the frontend for Ghostscript) is available here

GSView is shareware, but it's worth every single cent. Should be around US$ 30 now. 30 days trial period.

These tools will save you a lot of time and put you to the safe side.

An additional benefi: you can generate sleek PDF documents with Ghostscript. Or convert PDF documents to CAD, EPS, AI etc...

sorry, I forgot to post the URL for the pstoedit - the plug-in to convert vector, CAD, FLASH etc files:

    PSTOEDIT

Something else: some PCL laser printers can't print white on black. Using Ghostscript they can - flawlessly.

BTW, I've checked the new Ghostscript and GSView versions - now you can - as Gary mentioned - export Xara X EPS and open the *.eps file with Ghostscript. The previous versions generated error messages with these files.

There is much much more in these free packages. You can spend hours to discover how to professionally convert files, extract a TIF or TGA or PNG from an EPS, generate a FLASH file from your PDF or EPS, write a HTML file - you name it, it's there.

That's the problem with the word printer. I was referring to a commercial printer. A desktop printer seems to do well outputting screen resolution images.
