@acorn - that's good, but you can see the joins in your example, where the gradient suddenly changes [gary's point] - one solution would be a patch, same in the way I thought of above which is sort...
I would perhaps start out with a long rectangle with gradient
the fun bit, working out the angles at which to slice and splice where it changes direction...
great result with the stereogram :)
