I just tried. Says "Invalid file". I tried converting to RichTextFormat, but that failed with the same message. I have Word 2016.

well, it looks like the Xara application itself is doing this check.

... unless, there is another program in my PC that thinks it can check for SW updates of other applications....

Version 9 made a change to the default aspect ratio setting I believe.

So, by default, in V9, the Aspect Ratio is not locked. I liked the previous behavior. This is likely your issue.
