That's because they are bitmap's , not vector shapes.

You can import external text by copying iy from the source and paste it into Xara. You can do the same for images.
Else you can save the source and import it using File/Import.

Glad you sorted it. I don't think you can animate the background.

As Scotty says you can import bitmaps as textures. Go to Textures Options, select the asset you wish to add the texture to, tick the texture check box, then Load Texture...
