Reinhard, Create an oval (or other shape).
Use Smart Duplicate and pull out your line with the ovals overlapping.
Add Shapes (Ctrl+1).
With the Shape Tool, select all nodes and pick Smooth Join...

Reinhard, you can in XDPX.
You would create an oval, form a Scatter Brush and adjust the overlap.
This seems to always produce whole shapes along the line.
You would need to abut the end shapes...
