I use Maya mainly but also own Silo which is a really fine little modeler. At the upper end of the Scale though has to be Modo which I have access to in college and definitely the future of modeling...

Okay - here's one for you I have not seen before

You have an image you want to mask - Ctrl (Cmd) + J (twice) to make 2 copies of the intended victim.

Rename the first copy invert and hit Ctrl...
