    I am old fashioned - i don't like having to edit a stroke after I have made it - call it pride, I spent five years learning how to get a freehand stroke right first time, post editing time is wasted...

    a tip - make the brush with a named colour - that way it will respect the set colour in the program and use it when you draw, and you do not have open the dialog to change the colour afterwards...

    ... you can also use the shape builder tool for this adjusting the roundness and angle accordingly - you will of course then get a shape not a line, but can be useful - ok re-reading I see you have...

    I use PDF format to export vector from xara - it works fine for solid colour vector, gradients and transparency have issues - this is as much to do with xara being proprietary in the way it does...

    you got the edge on me there, I only ever built line-in power amps with valves, KT66/EL34, hum could still be an issue with though, darn earth loops... by the time I progressed from crystal to low...

    but in other programs that is not necessarily so

    you are right to say newbies to XDA should not expect...

    in the select tool - right click on the 'lock aspect ratio' padlock icon on the infobar and untick smart transform - this will enable you to deform the bitmap image using the boundary handles

    an alternative method would be to recolour the butterfly black and use bitmap tracer to get a vector shape of the butterfly - whilst, not the same as magic wand it is as close as you'll get in xara...
