i'd never heard of xara before comin on here, i've always bin an illy man myself but i mite check it out!
first of all sorry for the double post, here is a illustration i did today of one of my favourite groups jurrasic-5. mainly done in illustrator but the background was done in photoshop!
your best bet is to use the pen tool an trace round the image you want to keep, then once you're done go to paths on the layers palette and select the path and then make it a clipping path then save....

its photoshop as much as illustrator the logo was designed in illy but the effects are all photoshop an really its a pretty simple case of adjusting the modes on a layer!

heres some personal stuff ive done jus for fun after 2yrs without a pc of my own, i used to illustrate professioinally but moved away from the city an gave it up for a stressfree life in the country...
any of you guys checked out down and dirty tricks cos if you've got a fair bit of experience with illustrator this is amazin for cool techniques and stylish finishes?
have you seen what it looks like when printed cos i've done tons of graphics in various formats an onscreen it looks one way but in print they look great cos some are jus like lo-res screen previews?
from what you are saying it sounds like all you need to do is select the lines you wanna join with the white selection tool an press ctrl+j to join, works everytime for me!!!
