So, am I reading this right? I can create a placeholder, give it the name "<html>" and insert a php session start command in the placeholder, and it will put it before the html line in the file?

Never mind. (egg on face). I found where I had inadvertently pasted the menu also on the mouse over layer. I deleted it and now it works fine.
