Maybe it is just on the screen display Keith but I do the same thing as Boy. 0% Multiply transparency. Building up a few clones seems to darken the darks.
On screen and when printed.

it's a technique that works well for line art in quite a few programs....
edit - additional point: need to export and reimport the PNG to give it meaningful name [as in xar I posted earlier] rather than the one xara would choose for you [which can be duplicated and that is sometimes a problem]
