It will likely end up with deleting your preferences. To see if you really need to, you can create a new user profile on your computer and start illustrator using that new user profile. If illustrator works properly that means either there is corruption in your user account's illustrator preferences or the actual user profile of your operating system is corrupt. Either scenario will affect adobe applications this way.
Usually it is a problem with the adobe preference for the specific application.
