Sketchup and Kerkythea Rendering
Psaumure's thread XARA or 3D Rendering Software, got me thinking again about something I had a go at earlier this year. Thanks Paul.
Not being an artist ... I'm a CAD technician. I thought I'd try my hand with FREE Sketchup (I'm sure more than a few of you have tried it). I also discovered that Sketchup is exportable to a FREE rendering engine called "Kerkythea", and decided to have a look.
I drew - rather quickly - an ultramodern chess set, and wanted to do it in glass. Kerkythea seemed to have what I wanted. This was more to try and prove a concept than make a finished work of art. To be honest, my computer is rather slow, and I'm not sure whether I ran out of patience waiting for this to render, or something glitched slightly with the bases. However, for a net outlay of ZERO and about the same talent, I am more than pleased with the result.
I'm sure it's something one or two of you might like to have a look at.
One day hopefully, I'll revisit this. Work a little harder on the chess pieces, and see if I can't improve it somewhat.
Re: Sketchup and Kerkythea Rendering
That is quite a nice rendering engine, Keith.
I'm always amazed at what novel chess pieces artists come up with.
Yours are great!
First move was yours, eh?

Re: Sketchup and Kerkythea Rendering
Yes the rendering there on the clear glass set is great. Just think how long that would have taken in a non 3D engine.
Re: Sketchup and Kerkythea Rendering
Thanks Gary and Peter.
Was wondering if anyone ever looked at this thread ....
I think KERKYTHEA is definitely worth a look, and a second look.

That's a great looking chess set. Thanks Keith, I'm checking that one out myself.

I definitely was following this thread, Keith.
I downloaded, and I played for an hour with an imported OBJ file I exported from Cinema 4D.
I'm always looking for rendering and modeling programs to recommend. If you have a little patience, I'd recommend Kerkythea to anyone who wants to get the basics of rendering 3D stuff. The rendering engine is good; Keith provided an example and I saw that there are Pro-level options for reflections, fog, for editing materials, and even animations can be written out of this free software.
It's the best/easiest/nice-pricest 3D rendering software I've been shown to date.
Now, all the adventurous need to do is learn modeling, so they can render their sculptures. :)
Actually, if you download Sculptris, Free from the ZBrush people, and then mess up a sphere or something, and then export it, you'll see some of the power of KerkyThea's rendering engine.

Keith, you are to be congratulated on your 3D explorations and the quality of work you got out of this renderer. I know exactly the effort you put into it, much more interesting than my cartoon, and I truly would like to see in the future where this takes you.
My Best,
Gary

Thank you Gary, that means a lot to me coming from you.
