The solutions are great. Really when looking at creating an effect, understanding the problem thoroughly in addition to understanding the tools available creates the solutions.
One thing I noticed at design school was that a lot of people wanted 'effects' but didn't want to understand the fundamentals of representation of their idea. "I want something to look cool", "I want something to look dynamic!" "I want something to look realistic" etc. etc. Well, what examine the problem...what makes drapes look like drapes? That's not a 'how to in Xara' question, that's a 'what makes drapes look like drapes' question...
I apologize if I come of condescending, but I went to school with a lot of people wanting shortcuts rather than building a skillset which allowed them to do anything their mind imagines.
In the case of drapes, understanding light and cloth is more important than understand 'how to do it in xara'. You can do it with feathered strokes, you can do it with blends, you can do it with transparencies, etc. The end result is the goal, and if you aren't looking at the subject matter with a critical eye, such as how light and fabric work, then...did you learn anything? Maybe, but...there's opportunity here so I hope those opportunities to learn more than just 'the robotic automatic way to do it'. I hope understanding fabric and light was somehow understood.
I feel stupid old now for making such accusations, but I suppose, again, it stems from the fact I went to school with photorgraphers that didn't understand light. I wish that was a joke.
Thanks for the reply and no I do not take offense in what you said. I am neither a photographer or a proficient graphics use. I am just a guy who is fascinated by the veritable miracles I see created on all the software that is out there for the serious souls that are forging a career. I simply work at my church creating greeting cards for shut-ins, the ill, and whoever needs a thoughtful ideas so understand that I've never gone to school for this kind of work but am floored by the imaginations of all people in the graphics field. I send you many kudos for your thought provoking philosophy and your keen insight it to the need for being original. Thanks again for your advice.

As an aside, draw what you see...which is light bouncing off forms. :) Everything is simple shapes with light applying the perception you get from your vantage point...even cartoonists won't draw things 'perfectly and realistic' but they 'draw on' (pun!) real life and what they see.
