make a typewriter font looking more realistic in a document?
Hello,
I would like to make a image that contains a typewriter font looking more realistic.
The font itself imitates the original very well. But it looks like laserprint, of course, not like the original typewriter.
So I would like to ask you for help: what can be done in order to let the words (inserted with the typewriter-lookalike-font) looking more realistic as if they were original typewriting?
thanks for help

Re: make a typewriter font looking more realistic in a document?
couple of things come to mind:
if its a ink-ribbon typewriter the text would appear slightly sunken into the paper, if a carbon ribbon it could appear either way [sunken or raised] - both effects you should be able to get with bevel on the text [converted to editable shape I think]
ink ribbon ink tends to be a bit non-uniform in its application unless brand new, so a bit of shade variation, and the odd bit of missing imprint would help
carbon ribbon tends to be rather 'glossy' or 'matt' and again it doesn't always give 100% imprint

wow - some dodgy typewriters there Gary :D

Great fonts, indeed. I have nearly all of them collected in the past.
my problem is, that only very little of them come close to the original typewriter they have used in the former GDR for official documents.

Well, obviously choose the one that comes closest as far as the shape of the letters.
Other things you could do to make it look more authentic:
- Set the fill color to something approximating the darkest bits of the original text (eyedropper works well for this).
- Give the text a glow shadow, set the blue at a couple of pixels, and the transparency around 25-30%.
- Give the text a plasma or cloud transparency, adjust size to taste.

As Ben suggested a plasma or Fractal transparency could be used to erode the text further as well a bit map transparency could be used for this and if you use the profile sliders (just click the arrow that is on the info bar when the transparency tool is active) you can fine tune the effect even further.
