This globalisation ...
Inspired by Simsmj's exceptional work here I thought I'd have a bash at making a globe myself.
I began with the World Projection #1 from the Xara clipart gallery (you'll find it in the sub-category 'Geography') and from there made it up as I went along.
Recently told "If you were a gal you'd wear your bra back to front" I decided to do this thing in accordance with the reputation that person has allotted me and did nothing as per Simsmj's most excellent example.
I haven't attached the gif here 'cos it is a li'l too large.
Although 'tis only 123x123 px the file size is over 1MB.
Amazing.
So converted it to swf and attached that instead - still rather large though.
Haven't attached the source file 'cos I think the swf is big enough for one post - the source file is under 200kb..
This isn't a "Hey look what I did" post - it is the result of seeking different ways to do things and I'd be interested to hear what you make of it.

It is not zipped, just a straightforward swf.
Try the 'open' option instead of the 'save' option when you left click on it?
This may work.

Re: This globalisation ...
actually that's the way i did it first... no dice
it shows a dialog box and the bar increasing then that box disappears and real rapidly an unzipping box appears and then disappears and then that is that

Re: This globalisation ...
Thanks Intbel, that works great! [I feel special... and also at a loss about this .swf viewing problem.]
Is your globe spinning the right way? Seems to me we will have the sun rising in the west and setting in the east this way. [I could be wrong.]
BUT it is an EXCELLENT "animation".

Thanks - not as a good as could be made in a 3D prog but not so bad, so far, for something made solely in a 2D prog is it?
I can reverse the anim so it goes the other way.
Unfortunately Xara Xtreme does not have a reverse button so I will need to do it manually ... Grrrr! Not a problem with just ten or twenty frames but 150 frames? GRRRR!
The link will be deleted in a few hours, as will the rdio link - space is not a prob, I have to think of bandwidth 'cos this forum gets some seriously heavy traffic. That calls for another grrr! Doing a lot of grrr-ing lately.
Mostly 'cos I like the sound I make when I go grrrr!
P.S. Everyone is special ...

Re: This globalisation ...
Yes, it is getting better.
I did one in another program and you can see it here if you like. The people on my world have to hold on for dear life, I'm afraid.

Your world is to fast for me Sally - but at least it is going in the right direction, LOL!
I reversed mine, made a few changes and also reduced its size so as to be able to post the gif. (This will put Drifter into raptures of delight) the colour quality had to be sacrificed a bit though. Grrr.
My personal challenge - to produce a believable 3D animation without the use of 3D software has been accomplished I think.
Attached the source (.xar) file for anyone who wants to play.

Re: This globalisation ...
Drifter you may have to have Flash player installed or SwishMax player installed on you machine..the latest Flash 9 has a lot of security attached to it but I am not sure if that was the problem.

Re: This globalisation ...
Intbel, that's better, I was having trouble with your swf, too. I can see it properly, now.
Re reversing animation, I once made an animation in X3D that animated a Xara clip art, by putting all the frames onto the edge of a rotating disc in X3D. As the disc rotated, the different frames would appear at the top, and the direction of animation could be reversed by ticking the Reverse button in the Rotate dialogue box.
Sally, at least your people wouldn't have to risk walking off the edge of a contintent, falling through the centre of the earth and bouncing off the inside of China!

Re: This globalisation ...
Intbel - thank you. I shall figure out this .swf - I don't think I previously had this problem... perhaps it was one of the sp2 updates or something. I googled this and actually saw a discussion on this.
Yesterday I also dl'd/installed this:
SWF Live Preview 1.0
SWF Live Preview is aimed to help you preview Macromedia Flash files using standard built-in Windows Explorer. Excellent design, easy-to-use interface, powerful features and unique capabilities make SWF Live Preview indispensable application. And it is free of charge! You won't find anything similar!
Welp, that did absolutley nothing. This .swf discussion is now intermixed with two of your great drawing threads - sorry. If I could I would take remarks re. this and put them into a "I can't view .swf files" thread.
Anywho - your globe is great and thanks for doing that so I could view it.
Sally - your globe is great too - and yes, quite fast, but we all seem to be in a hurry all the time nowadays.
Simsmj - that bird thing is excellent - how you come up with these things is beyond me
Scotty - thanks - I'll dl/install one of those today.

Re: This globalisation ...
well, i just went to the Adobe flash player site. It said I had version 8.0.22.0 and they were now on version 9.0.16.0. I installed that.
Then I went to view Intbel's .swf file in the first post of this thread. I chose OPEN in the dialog box. I now do NOT see the progress bar showing it opening - instead - get this - it immediately shows me the Unzip thing - and then there is nothing, no-where, no-how, no way....
I'm totally stumped.

That is a great solution to not-importing-animated-gifs-into-Xara 3D.
Hmmm ... have you considered using more than one disc with different anim pics? That could be fun.
I'll use that - it should also work nicely on a rectangular shape (cylinder?) rotating horizontally don't you think? Only one way to find out ...
Gotta have a reverse button in Xara Extreme. Grrrr.
I don't know wha the prob is with viewing swf.
Maybe 'tis something
I'm doing?
Are you able to view this one okay? It was exported into flash in the same manner.
Sally is too fast a lady for me ...

Um ... wondering why you didn't go to Macromedia's site and install Macromedia's player?

I don't like that much, really I don't.
Next thing y'know they'll be attempting to buy Xara and that is even more scary.

Re: This globalisation ...
I don't like flash myself, the only reason I have the player installed is to see some of the things posted here at Talkgraphics.
If a website I visit uses flash I quickly select another site to go to.

I'll agree to a certain extent.
I don't like Flash sites - that is, sites created in Flash.
However, I do use and like Flash for other purposes.
If I want to put a movie on site I'll first convert it to Flash.
Also large animated gifs.
But Flash sites per se - no thanks!

Re: This globalisation ...
Flash, smash, not interested, I'm limited to basic html myself. Also, if it took you 7 days to create this I don't want to hear, understood. Imagine what people would think if they thought I was writing to you know who:D.........frank

So what did you do which I didn't? (My Xar file is attached in a previous post so's you can see)
BTW - yours is going backwards same as mine was.
You going to reverse it? ;)

Re: This globalisation ...
Another great anim - you guys are putting some of us to shame.

Re: This globalisation ...
LOL,
Yeah, I noticed it after I posted. I don't know why I do that. I guess my brain works in reverse. I guess I can reorder the frame sequence. I wish Xara Xtreme had a button you could push to do that for you.

I have been hankering after a reverse button for years.
About five years ago I made a formal enquiry and was told 'tis not possible.
I didn't believe that then and I don't believe it now.
Here's yours reversed and with a bit of tilt added.

Good job. I went in and reordered the frames one by one. Now it's going in the right direction.

Raymond,
Similar to what you did, I Think. I used clipart map, colored and beveled it, then duplicated it twice, spreading the images evenly apart, goup them. Place a sphere on a separate frame as background.
I set the nudge size to about 3 or 4 (depending on how fast you want your globe to turn and how many frames you want).
I then copy the first frame with just the maps and nudge the map image once with the right arrow key. I keep doing that until I've reached a complete revolution indicated by the guideline.
Duplicating the background sphere, I do a ctrl, alt,v to paste the new sphere on each frame and then, one frame at a time, clicking on the map and the sphere on top of the map and hitting ctrl3.
I know, it's a long process.
I've attached a file that you can tinker with.

I did near enough the same - 'cepting I used Ctrl+2 :)

This globalisation ...
Home planet done - here's our favourite moon.
And for the first time the dark side of the moon is revealed.
This at the behest of a certain Mme.Bode who is astronomically challenged.

Re: This globalisation ...
Just an observation, I notice that both the globes are syncronised in as much they are showing the same scene, there is probably an simple explanation of why this is so but it escapes this old brain for the moment.

So I am astronomically challenged. Well, did you use a cow??? Lotta bull I might add. The moon has an atmosphere of pulverized bolonie, it seems.
Very good. Spins faster than Jupiter.
