Re: Up and Down the line.
Not a pretty picture. :O
The best I can offer is to use the space bar and Kerning to adjust the position of the characters.

Re: Up and Down the line.
Iggy, I use a couple of standard Xara tricks:
- Slice Shapes
- Repel Text Under
- Text Area with centred Text
Create a Rectangle.
Draw your curve across it.
Slice Shapes
Separate the box pieces just over the width of a character.
Soft-group.
Repel Text Under.
Place over the Text Area. Note, all the characters need to have a return between them.
Adjust to fit.
If I want to change the curve, select the split box and use the Shape Tool to pick horizontal pairs of control points and move these to the new curve.

Re: Up and Down the line.
I suppose you could also do it with a curved envelope though the text will not longer be editable
Re: Up and Down the line.
I assumed text and curve needed to remain editable.

BRILLIANT ... JUST BRILLIANT, what a great idea. Wouldn't have thought of it in a million years.
Re: Up and Down the line.
How did you get it vertical on the curve?

Thanks Keith, when a get a niggle, I itch and scratch it away.
I had tried Text Inside a line converted to a shape and that is a no-go.

Re: Up and Down the line.
So whenever I try to "Join text to curve" this is what happens. What am I missing?
Re: Up and Down the line.
As far as I'm aware, you don't need to "join text to curve" the deformation is created by the "REPEL TEXT UNDER".
Re: Up and Down the line.
The reason I want to join the text to the curve is so that I can manipulate the curvature of text afterwards. I can't bend the text without joint it first. Also, I don't know what you mean by, "REPEL TEXT UNDER". Is that something I need to turn off?
Re: Up and Down the line.
What version are you using Iggy? REPEL TEXT UNDER has been a feature for a few versions now (at least since V9 which is the oldest one I still have loaded). Once you invoke it, you can change the curvature of the text, by changing the shape of the repelling object.
Have a look at the example XAR that Acorn posted, and adjust the curves with the shape editor.
