Autopackage install does nothing
Using MepisLinux updated to Debian testing/unstable. Downloaded autopackage. Followed the online instructions about setting permissions and opening it. Nothing happened - no installation, nothing.
Downloaded the .bz2 version. It would not untar from command line, but Konqueror was able to open the archive and I was able to manually copy the xaralx folder inside it to my home folder. From there, XaraLX ran just fine.
Never encountered this autopackage thing before, much prefer standard DEB or RPM packages.
Re: Autopackage install does nothing
Can you try downloading the package file again and running it from the command line please, after you've made it executable of course.
./RecXaraLX0.5_rev1175.package
What happens? Do you get any errors?
Thanks
Neil
Re: Autopackage install does nothing
Hello,
I got a similar problem on ubuntu/dapper amd64
Here is the complete session:
Code:
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara$ apt-cache policy autopackage
W: Kann Paket autopackage nicht finden
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara$ apt-cache search autopackage

gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara$ bash RecXaraLX0.5_rev1175.package
The installation of this software requires some additional support
code to be installed.
A] If the support code is found in a local directory, it will be used.
The file containing the support code will be called:
"autopackage.tar.bz2"
or
B] If there is an active Internet connection, the support code will be
downloaded from:

I followed then the description on the website for amd64 Os's:
Code:
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara$ sudo -i Password:
Password:
root@ubuntu:~ # sed 's:/usr/lib/:/usr/lib32/:' < /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders32
root@ubuntu:~ # ls /etc/pango32/pangorc
ls: /etc/pango32/pangorc: No such file or directory
root@ubuntu:~ # vi /etc/pango32/pangorc
root@ubuntu:~ # 32bit
-bash: 32bit: command not found
root@ubuntu:~ # vi /usr/local/bin/32bit
root@ubuntu:~ # chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/32bit
root@ubuntu:~ # exit
logout
Then I downloaded the tar.bz2 and unpacked it, and cd into ~/download/xara/xaralx:
Code:
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara/xaralx$ cd bin
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara/xaralx/bin$ ls
xaralx
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara/xaralx/bin$ 32bit xaralx

gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara/xaralx/bin$ sudo vi /usr/local/bin/32bit
Password:
Here is a problem with the 32bit script on your xaralx website:
I altered into
Code:
gerhard@ubuntu:~/download/xara/xaralx/bin$ 32bit ./xaralx
(xaralx:8011): Pango-WARNING **: error opening config file '/etc/pango32/pangorc': Die Schlüsselwertedatei enthält die Zeile »Pango]«, welche kein zulässiges Schlüssel-Wert-Paar, keine Gruppe und kein Kommentar ist.

Now it starts, I don't know what's the matter with the WARNINGS.
If that is of any interrest, I'll post the console output in english language...
Kind regards
Gerhard
Re: Autopackage install does nothing
For me, Autopackage returns an error message about the package not being built correctly. I've filed a bug report.
The error says that glibc symbols must be GLIBC 2.3.4 or higher and to use a different builder.
The bin/xaralx also won't execute when I untar to a home folder from the Bzip2 archive.

You should not need to use this wrapper on Dapper (you did on Breezy). I have fixed the web site.

Sorry, it took me a long time to get around to trying again. I tried again with a 0.7 version, and have a running XaraXtreme for Linux! Here's the version info:
Xara Xtreme
Version: 0.7 (1692)
Build date: 10-Aug-06 21:05
Built against: wxWidgets 2.6.3
Usage: xaralx [xar-file...]
I've encountered only two problems with it:
1. When I start it up, I get this error message:
can't open file '/usr/share/mimelnk/audio/x-ms-wax.desktop' (error 13: Permission denied)
Clicking OK lets Xara start up just fine.
2. When I print, XaraXtreme crashes and asks if it's OK to report the error. I let it do that, than have to close Xara. IN THE MEANTIME, my print job prints just fine.
Re #2, I seem to recall encountering something similar to that with the Windows version, with the CorelXara 1.0 version ...
Anyway, the autopackage install worked. I still see no reason for Xara to roll it's own way of packaging and installing things - every Linux distro already has package managers that work just fine. But I guess this thread can be closed.
