It might be useful to explain to designers that in adding a Personal Smart Field to your document, a Document Smart Field of the same Name is created, prefixed with your Windows logon username (I presume).
The problem arises when you decide to Insert the same Personal Smart Field elsewhere into the document, this action resets any changed Document Smart Field Value back to that of the Personal Smart Field value.
