RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
I want to insert an RSS feed of a Google Blogger blog into my Xara website. I've tried the RSS Widget in the Content Catalogue, but when I select it, I see a "Bad Gateway" error, so cannot configure it.
Does anyone know of an RSS widget that I could use instead, please?

This was reported a time back and Xara has done nothing! Please open https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...SS-WIdget-Fail and add your comments/concerns to the Thread to promote it into Xara's attention.
http://www.webrss.com/&title=WebRSS_mx is dead.
http://www.webrss.com/ is dead.
C:\Users\[userid]\AppData\Local\Xara\XtremePro\15\Cache\designs\eng \components\layoutcomponents\widgets\webrss.xwr is a useless file that needs to be updated.
All RSS viewers now seem to need a subscription, free or otherwise, so there is a lot of dis-benefit involved in including one into your site for end-users.
i have no simple solution at present.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks, @Acorn.
I've been experimenting with https://rss.bloople.net/, which seems to do what I need. I'm just creating a box on my site and setting it as a placeholder for the code that that tool generates. It works fine to get the news articles from my blog. However, I need to be able to style it. At the bottom of the page Bloople page, once you've created the feed, it says you can style it as follows:
Quote:
The HTML generated by this code contains CSS hooks so you can style the output in your stylesheet.
The title of the feed is displayed in a <h3> tag, with the class feed-title.
The feed description is displayed in a <p> tag with class feed-desc.
The feed icon is displayed in an <img> tag with class feed-title-image.
Each feed item title is displayed in a <h4> tag with class feed-item-title.
Each feed item description is displayed in a <p> tag with class feed-item-desc.
But I don't know how to create these styles in Xara. I know you're pretty good at coding... any chance you can point me in the right direction, please?

Happy to help but can we work on a common RSS Feed so we can compare like-for-like?
I chose http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/rss.xml for a starter.
I used the IFRAME output, copied into the Placeholder body of a box. You need to add width and height: <iframe src="//rss.bloople.net/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.bbci.co.uk%2Fnews%2Frss.xm l&showtitle=false&showempty=true&type=html" width="100%" height="100%"></iframe>.
The final wrinkle to be able to use CSS on the IFRAME is to give it an ID: id="bbcnews": <iframe src="//rss.bloople.net/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.bbci.co.uk%2Fnews%2Frss.xm l&showtitle=false&showempty=true&type=html" width="100%" height="100%" id ="bbcnews"></iframe>.
No point in tweaking CSS until we are aligned.
There probably has to be a Refresh button added at some point.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks, Acorn - really appreciate your help. I think I've recreated what you describe, so happy to continue.
Key things I need to change:
- the font and size of the headlines for each post
- the body text font and size for each post
- the line spacing of the body text
- if possible, image sizes - because all of the items in the feed I'll actually be using include images.
One question: is there a particular reason to use the iframe option and not the default Javascript option? I ask because the problem with using an iframe is that I need to know in advance what the maximum height is, whereas with the script option, I don't have to set a height.

We can do both.
The problem with the JavaScript on is if the number of feeds is long, they disappear off the bottom of the page and you cannot control the Xara page height dynamically (well easily, as you need code).
Make a standard 960px page. Create a tall, narrow box and add the JavaScript code and Preview. The bottom will be cut-off.
Do the same for the IFRAME code and you have a box with scrollbars so it is bounded.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks, Acorn. That makes sense. I'm coming at this from Adobe Muse, which dynamically changed the page length, as content grows, but you're right, of course, that it won't work that way in Xara WD.
We can stick with the iframe approach, and presumably I can turn off the borders and scrollbar if they are not needed? The length of the content I'm pulling in will be fairly consistent, because I restrict it to only showing the first X words, and then there's a link to the full article on the blog that generates the RSS feed.

Yes, all doable.
Busy for a few hours so perhaps you can compose what you what the feed to offer up so I have a starter.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Sorry, but busy elsewhere with family.
Just realised that changing IFRAME CSS of a page from elsewhere is tricky and requires JavaScript, jQuery and a lot of huffing.
As you are happy that the size of the feed will be constrained, I have included a demo of the feed script wrapped in a DIV in the box's Placeholder body, together with the CSS to change the contents presentation.
The DIV needs an ID, which I included as 'bbcnews'.
The CSS is not checked at all and the selectors might not be accurate.
In the Page head is a lot of CSS play stuff to control the container.
You can probably remove all of it.
Do note, you want the rss-js page and not the index page.
The index page was for the IFRAME approach.
Included for reference as I intend to use that elsewhere.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Hi Acorn,
Thanks very much for all your work on this, and apologies for the delay in my reply -- I started a new day job on Wednesday, so have been pretty busy for the last couple of days with lots of new stuff!
I agree that the Surfing Waves feed looks really good, and I think it's going to be more customizable for what I need. I've had a play with it, but have two immediate questions:
- Can I set the line spacing of the text?
- Can I include images from my original blog articles?
- Can I retain formatting from the blog? I mean, many of the blog posts start with the author's name on its own line after the title and in bold. Surfing Waves doesn't seem to respect this at the moment.
It might be helpful if I show you specifically what I'm trying to do. I currently manage this website, which is in Adobe Muse. Since Adobe has made the (terrible!) decision to end development and support for Muse, I'm transitioning to Xara Web Designer. If you look at the Latest News page on the current site, you'll see that it's an RSS feed of a Google Blogger blog. What I need to be able to do is style Surfing Waves, or whatever alternative I adopt, so that it looks exactly like the current Latest News page, so that it's formatting is consistent with the rest of the website.
Do you think this is possible with Surfing Waves, perhaps using a customer CSS file?
-
Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
I think I am going to disappoint you.
To get the image, you need to employ Media RSS.
i have not found any suitable embed MRSS Viewer.
I have assumed the Feed is http://blog.sela-sheffield.org/feeds/posts/default.
Potentially, one could use jQuery and AJAX to extract title, description and tags and build up a suitable HTML structure and apply CSS.
I have looked on blogspot and not found any guidance.

Thanks, Acorn. The https://rss.bloople.net tool that we were using at the start of this thread does pull in the images: see this example Attachment 121782
The problem with this is styling it: I need to change the colours, font, sizes, line spacing and (ideally) the size of the images.
Do you think that's possible?

longer answer:
Add the following into the current Placeholder code (body):
Code:
<style>

font-size: 14pt;
font-weight: 400;
letter-spacing: 0.75px;

Awesome! Thank you so much, Acorn! :D
The final thing I need to do is change the font. The one I'm using is non-standard, so it gets output as a webfont. How can I make the text here work in that font, too?

Gary, I am into guessing territory here but you would have to install your font into the page.
What I have tried is adding Google fonts to a small text box. Once the font is available you can add it to the CSS:
Code:
<div id="rss-feed">
<script src="//rss.bloople.net/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.sela-sheffield.org%2Ffeeds%2Fposts%2Fdefault%3Falt%3Drss&limit=6&showtitle=false&type=js"></script>
</div>
<style>
#rss-feed {
color: #787878;
line-height: 32px;
font-size: 14pt;
font-weight: 400;
letter-spacing: 0.75px;
font-family: Biryani, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
}
h4.feed-item-title {
font-size: 24pt;
}
h4.feed-item-title>a {
text-decoration: none;
font-size: 18pt;
color: #175aa9;
}
p.feed-item-desc {
color: #787878;
line-spacong: 24pt;
}
a[href$='more'] {
text-decoration: none;
color: #175aa9;
}
a[href^='https://rss'] {
display: none;
}
</style>
Changes are in bold red.
These include wrapping your code in a DIV tag with ID 'rss-feed' to make the CSS tidier.
The font family will start at the left and work its way to the right if no suitable font is found.
I just chose Biryani as an example. You need to pick a Google Font closest to Blake.
Perhaps a font expert can advise?

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks for this, Acorn. It turns out that XWD already does everything necessary to make the fonts available, since I'm using them on other pages of the site, so it exports them as webfonts. So all I needed to do was specify the name of the fonts in your code, in place of Biryani.
My final problem is that the date of posts is not appearing in the RSS. It appears on the original version (www.sela-sheffield.org/news.html), but isn't there in the new version. Any ideas how I can fix that?

Found it for Surfing Waves: In the Entry contents section, ensure that you turn the Html (images / links) button is set to "on". (This will result in the Entry contents maximum length being overwritten). Sorry I missed it.

Gary, if the Viewer is not aware or is not extracting the date then probably no.
The best seems to be with setting 'Posted time ago' to On in the Surfing Waves RSS Widget. but you get 3 days ago and not a date.
It would be possible to write some jQuery for items that were posted in the last six days to re-present an actual date. after that it would be one week ago, etc.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks for this, Acorn. I've done some more experimenting with Surfing Waves, and I think I can live with the "X time ago" instead of the date. So, now my challenge is to create a custom style sheet to make it look like the one we were creating with the other RSS feed, earlier in this thread (i.e. increased line spacing, larger title, etc., and if possible the "X time ago" for the post below the title, rather than at the bottom).
Would you be able to point me in the right direction, please?

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Gary, what a journey.
Almost there. The problem (but with a clean solution) is that Surfing Waves RSS installs an IFRAME based on the code your provided so modification of the values needs to use an external CSS file.
All well and good until you discover that the 'rssfeed_css_url=' statement needs a fully qualified URL. so you have to upload the CSS file and reference it with its final destination path.
This fails with local Export so you have to test with Preview and you then have to ensure the correct URL that is generated by Xara's internal server, e.g., rssfeed_css_url='http://localhost:8000/virtb112bcd3/index_htm_files/sela.css';.
Xara has an arcane method of attaching files.
You need this - Attachment 121895 - you need to unpack this and add it to a folder as sela.css.
XARA'S OFFICIAL-UNOFFICIAL METHOD
I have included this for reference - see ACORN'S METHOD below.
In Xara, create a small box. select it then press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+A to open an Attache file dialog.
Navigate to sela.css and select that.
Preview the page and in Chrome or another browser, copy the virt part of the address (my example - virtb112bcd3).
In your design page, edit the Placeholder code, rssfeed_css_url='http://localhost:8000/virtb112bcd3/index_htm_files/sela.css';. changing the virt part to the one you copied.
Preview again and you should see all the CSS in sela.css being applied.
ACORN'S METHOD
Now I find the Ctrl+Shift+Alt+A approach is hit and miss when changing sela.css repeatedly.
Create a small box and ensure it is on your design page.
Add a Link > Link to file and locate sela.css.
I keep the box red so I know what it is.
You then have to change and save the contents of sela.css to suit your needs and then relink to sela.css again and Apply to refresh.
Note the virt faff is still needed if Previewing.
I, finally, add <div></div> to the box's Placeholder body code or <link rel="stylesheet" href="index_htm_files/sela.css"/> to the box's Placeholder head code to hide it from view.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks for this, Acorn. Going to have a play with it this weekend. Just wondering, though, unless I've misunderstood something: can't I just upload the CSS file to my webspace manually, using an FTP client, and then use its fully qualified URL in the Surfing Waves code for rssfeed_css_url?
-
Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks again for this, Acorn. I tried uploading the css file directly to my FTP server and then giving Surfing Waves a fully qualified URL from there. It seems to work fine. I've edited the CSS some more to make start making it match the original RSS feed at www.sela-sheffield.org/news.html.
There are two things that I'm still struggling with.
- Each news item title is underlined, and I can't figure out why or how to turn the underlining off;
- the hover effect doesn't seem to work on the "Read More" links. They should turn the same colour as the body text when hovered, but this isn't working.
I'm copying below the CSS as it currently stands, and it would be awesome if you can help me over this final hurdle, please!

Gary, sorry for the delay.
All that I can see wrong is the pseudo-classes for the anchor link - a:link/visited/hover/active all had a space separating them.
If that doesn't work then Xara is probably overriding them elsewhere so adding !important might work.
Code:
.feed-container .content .item .title a: link {
color: green !important;
text-decoration: none !important;
}

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
@Acorn,
I've hit a bit of a snag with this. As mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I need the RSS Feed to display in a particular font. I'd specified that font in the Surfing Waves RSS feed, and thought it was working. But it turns out that it was only working on my computer because I have the relevant font installed. It doesn't work on other machines.
I'm trying to add it as a webfont, by adding the following to the CSS file for Surfing Waves:
Code:
@font-face{font-family:"TUoS Blake";src:url("assets/tuosblake.eot");src:local("☺"), url("assets/tuosblake.woff") format("woff");font-style:normal;}
@font-face{font-family:"TUoS Blake";src:url("assets/tuosblake-bold.eot");src:local("☺"), url("assets/tuosblake-bold.woff") format("woff");font-style:bold;}
I'm then setting the font for the feed-container to be "TUoS Blake". This has previously worked fine for me with other aspects of my site, but it's not working here.
Do you have any ideas what might be wrong?

Do you have any ideas what might be wrong?
Gary
Gary, I don't know much. The font-face code needs to be very early in the head. Also, is the font, WOFF file(s), actually on your destination server under the assets folder?
See if anything helps in https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/using-font-face/ or http://nicewebtype.com/notes/2009/10...css-font-face/.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks, Acorn. I've figured out what the problem is, but not got a solution yet. When I look at the site with Developer Tools in Google Chrome, I see an error that says:
I don't suppose you've got any ideas how I grant access, have you?!

I've fixed it! :D

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
One final snag, @Acorn (I'm sure this will be the last...!)...
When I resize the browser window and hit one of my variants' breakpoints, the RSS feed disappears and I have to refresh to make it load again. I think I need some script to make the frame refresh after resize? Any ideas?
The page his here, if you want to see what I mean: https://www.sela-sheffield.org/newsite/news.htm

Gary, I thought part of the problem may be that the RSS Feed parameters still have the width as 920px. The IFRAME seems to respond all right for the smallest Variant without a refresh. So discount setting up three different feeds for now.
I shall assume you will always have jQuery loaded. So you could add a Placeholder to just refresh the IFRAME on the browser resize:
Quote:
<script>
$(window).resize(function(){
document.getElementById('rssfeed_frame').contentDo cument.location.reload(true);});
</script>
It is a bit of a sledgehammer but it should work. You could include width ranges that would trigger the code but it gets quite messy to write, test and maintain.

Not sure I understand this. There are three variants: 960px, 700px, and 400px. Whenever one of those breakpoints is hit, the iframe contents disappear until they page is refreshed.
Can I just confirm: where on the page should I put the refresh code you supplied? In the "Body" section of the Page Properties?
Edit: I've tried that - Web Properties > Page > HTML Code Insertion > Body and pasted the code you sent me, but it doesn't seem to be working, so I think I must have misunderstood.

I would have gone for the head myself as it need to be viewed by all the Variants.

Re: RSS feed to integrate into Xara website
Thanks, Acorn. I've added the code to the page head for the News page, where the RSS feed is, but it's still not working. Do I need to add anything else?
