Flat washes
I'm new to Painter X, I'm coming off of Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7. I'm trying to create a flat, transparent, wash with a brush. Think watercolor. Now obviously there are two large groups of brushes dedicated to watercolor but nothing I can find or modify will do what I want. When you make a stroke while depressing the mouse button/using a intuos pen and then double back on the mark it makes a darker mark. I want to get rid of the darker part. I could do this in PSP7, in fact it was the default. Basically I want a brush that makes transparent and flat blobs that don't build up as long as you are applying the brush in one stroke. I've tried changing the method from build up but they still get darker when you overlap or double back on your stroke. Maybe Painter can't do this? Any ideas would be helpful!

Re: Flat washes
Hi SShaw welcome
Painter is a very complex tool - have a look around this forum and you should find posts by Jinny Brown and others that point towards lots of very helpful tutorials etc.
Meanwhile one way to do the specific task you mention:
use 'blunt chalk 10' - at default settings, except set opacity low - I set at 15%
paint on a transparent layer - whose transparency is set low - I set 25%
the attached is the result - canvas has been hidden - there is slight build up but it 'flattens out'
sure there are many other ways of doing it - I don't claim to be an expert :)
EDIT - PS lowering the level of resat will help, and maybe grain too - experiment

Re: Flat washes
You're welcome, steve.
It's true, there are many ways to paint a smooth wash and your suggestion is a good one, too.
One of the keys to learning Painter is plenty of time spent experimenting, then taking notes when we find something that works or gives us an effect we may want to reproduce later.
Play, experiment, and let it be fun. We learn a whole lot that way without getting all stressed out.

Re: Flat washes
Thanks to both of you! I will try both of the methods you listed.
