Is there a way to make the font larger in the Page & Layer gallery window, specifically, the page names? My old eyes really struggle with that and the names are frequently read and referred to.

I don't think so. One thing that should work is to reduce the resolution of your monitor. This will make everything larger.
Right click on the desktop and select Screen Resolution. Try the next setting down.
Can you use Magnifier? In Windows 8, it allows a quick preset toggle on and off.
