To keep a popup layer open in order to type on the layer etc you can enter (lock) into the layer name ... is there a way to then close this layer once open? Say with an X in the corner?

yes make a graphic x and put this in the link field

in mx you dont have to do that - just click settings next to the layer selection in the link dialog and put in a tick in the "close popup layer automatically"
