Rik, nice but technically the Twenties don't start until 2021.
When a child is born, they are not one until a year has passed but that year is referred to as its first year (of existence). Our calendar started at 1 A.D, so the first decade was 1 to 10 and subsequent decades must end on the zero.
Discuss.

Ah, you're just looking for a fight :D
It's like discussing the chicken and the egg, or whether handrawn is actually handrawn, or is he flesh and blood.
Personally, I blame the Mayans because they can't defend themselves.

Re: Scribble January 2020
We're discussing whether the 20s start at 2020 or 2021?!
-
Re: Scribble January 2020
New decade or not - that’s an excellent drawing Rik.

From a diagramming perspective the overhang is not possible at horizontal point 3 :nerd:.
To explain, it has to be along the lines of :point Attachment 126062 rotflmao
As a lampoon, I enjoyed it very much.

I find it quite funny, I was going to enter a scribble and I had the same idea. Well will have to sit this one out if I can't think of anything else.

Re: Scribble January 2020
Maybe you could you could make a sheet of paper look like it had torn edges or perhaps a news paper article torn out or just a newspaper with a hole where an article was torn out. Just a suggestion.

piffle
1 AD had, like everything else measured in time, a begiining and an end - the calander starts at it's beginning not it's end, elapsed time always begins at 0 [zero]
even the shortest unit of time has an elapsed period and you would have to be as thick as two short Plancks not to understand this :D

Piffle back. Start at the beginning of 1 AD and pass the time to reach then end of 1 AD and you have a year. Do the same for 10 years and you have a decade. So the second decade must start at the beginning of 11 AD. Through mathematical induction it is therefore True that each and any decade starts when the calendar year ends in a one.The "'Twenties" therefore starts at the beginning of 01 January 2021. QED.

Re: Scribble January 2020
I don't think I was very clear [so unlike me, I know :o]
the calender starts at the beginning, but calenders don't have '0', unlike elapsed time, they start at day one / year one
that is for practical reasons so all the '0' '1' '2' are together as a decade, otherwise it would somewhat messy for those not used to thinking about it mathematically
they still have the same number of decades years, except for the very first, which does a 'february' so to speak, and only has 9
nomenclature

A decade is always 10 years; there is no other definition. The ordinal "'Twenties" is 2020 to 2029. The cardinal decade of the calendar is 2011 to 2030. Bot are 10 years. So it all boils down to where you are cardinal or ordinal.
We have to posit handrawn is cardinal rather than print off a handrawn dictionary. It saves more trees.
February with 28 or 29 days is a different kettle and is a crude adjustment for our Sidereal year not being exactly 365 days.

Re: Scribble January 2020
yes the decades all have the same number of years sorry, that was a typo.. and the 'february' comment was sorta fliipant, it not then being a real decade
and yes if it is not 10 years it is not a decade
cardinal or ordinal, quantitiy or positional [list] .... in the real world there are other ways of defining something than just using mathemetics

Happy New Year to all - if it’s not too late to say that.
Here’s my January scribble - ‘Landscape with dung beetle’ :D (Thanks Bob for the idea for the title!)
It’s actually a rework of something I did back in 2013 for a screen printing project to celebrate these fantastic ecological engineers.
