When I want to narrow (only) the width of the vertical navbar, the whole rectangle will get smaller in width + heigt; I only want to change the width, not the height. A smaller font works but I don't want my font to become too small. I've tried to ungroup and all that, but didn't find any solution.

Apart from a smaller font you can't change the width only.
The minimum navbar width is controlled by the longest line of textQuote:

Make any adjustments. The other buttons will change the match the changes you make to the Home button.
One strange thing with the button bar in my screen shot. When I adjusted the width, the text was Left justified. When I changed the justification to Left justified, then the text was Centered again. :O
