favicon
favourites icon
.ico
I've noticed the favicons sometimes disappear.:eek:
Is their anyway to prevent this?
hi there,
favicon in IE will only appear if the site is a favorite
in other browsers they even appear if they're not a favorite
Gr.Hans
i don't think thats true :confused:
i've just put a favicon into my sites and heres the sites i used for the info
http://www.sean.co.uk/a/webdesign/favicon.ico.shtm
http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/ (same as jack said)
i found www.sean.co.uk before the other one and thats displayed the favicon without the page being a favorite, so not sure if above is 100% or not
Check out these web design books, they've really helped me:

:)
Thanks for the link.
Been meaning to work this out for ages
I'm sorry for the flaw in my statement
I should have said that in IE it doesn't allways show unless it's a fav
(so sometimes it doesn't work)
This was what i intended to say
Gr,Hans
Dumb bird here again
I tried this and it doesn't work, even though I used all the suggestions from the sites quoted? Any hints on what's going wrong? :confused:
Thanks

what have you done so far?:)
did you create the icon and convert to .ico
did you put the code between the head tags
:D
Hi Suunto
I have created the .ico and added the html into my header?!
Thanks
Hey ShinyB
1.Create an image file. 16x16 pixels,convert it to ICO format.
2. Upload it to the root of your server as favicon.ico. or anything.ico
3. include this code in your webpage between the <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags:
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.shinyb.com/favicon.ico">
thats all i done, just following the links i posted on the previous pages
i have one site with a different icon on each page using the above 1.2.3
Is very bizarre as I have followed these instructions step by step. Can you view the source on my web page and see if there is anything blazingly obvious I have/haven't done? http://www.big-impact.co.uk
Ps. favicon.ico is uploaded to the root also :confused:
Hi Shiny, (my Leicester neighbour).
Your blue UFO like icon is working.
I know that sometimes a browser will not immediately load up the icon if it has been recently replaced on the server etc.
Anyway, if I can see it, it means that the rest of the world outside Leicester can also view it.
Strange that you don't use your logo (or any other logo) on your web pages.
Anas
Hello there,
I am dumb, just checked on another laptop in the house and it is there. May be that I have an old version of IE!!
On the use of the logo it was very difficult to fit it in as it is my husband's site and the design is quite boxy whereas the logo is circular. May try to re-design it as I know you are right there!
Thanks
ShinyB
yeeeah, i can see it,

Hi Marcia,
the Internet Explorer loads the Favicon picture as a temporary file. After cleaning up your Cache (Internet Explorer temporary files folder), the picture is deleted. Another reason for this is, that the file in the Cache is expired. The Internet Explorer shows you then the standard icon.
Meilleures salutations
Remi
Oh, yes, of course... Thanks Remi !
Viele Grüße,
Marcia
Ok, I opened Windows Explorer and the opened the index.htm file with NotePad. I inserted the following code just before the </Head> :
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON"
HREF="/index.htm/RECMGM flag.ico">
Didn't work. In fact, when I saw that it didn't work, I reopened the index.htm file in Windows Explorer and the code I had put in there was gone.
Yes Ron, it sounds like you've manually placed your text into the pages source file. If this is the case this part of the html file will be lost every time you re-export your site from XX. You need to use a head placeholder. I'll see if I can find a link.
Here you go Ron
Ron, the mistake you have made is:
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON"
HREF="/index.htm/RECMGM flag.ico">
It should be on one line not contain index.htm not be UPPER CASE and use no spaces.
Use this:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/recmgm-flag.ico" />
As for it disappearing? Could you have perhaps forgotten to save after editing in notepad?
Like this:
<link rel="shortcut icon"href="/home_htm_files/bitmaps/RECMGMflag.ico">
Not quite Ron
Like this:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/home_htm_files/bitmaps/recmgmflag.ico" />
When I said no spaces, I was referring to the space in the name of the icon and it being upper case.
Just ensure your .ico file is where the href is pointing to ;)
Ok. I copied what you wrote in your last post and pasted it into a placeholder on my index page, then published it. Still no icon.
Did you rename your icon to 'recmgmflag.ico' and make sure you uploaded it to /home_htm_files/bitmaps/ ??
I'll double check, but yes, I renamed it so there were no upper case letters and used Fire fox FTP server to make sure the file was copied over to the correct directory. Give me a minute and I'll double check...
Can you give me the full URL to your .ico please
If it's at your BuyDezignz site, something like: http://buydezignz.com/home_htm_files/bitmaps/recmgmflag.ico
Then Ron it should be:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/index_htm_files/recmgmflag.ico" />
Ok, so to be clear, I'm going to put the code you just wrote into the placeholder in my file and publish it again.
You know what Steve, it doesn't matter anymore, I accidentally deleted my Xara file and had run CCleaner to empty my Recycle Bin. So it's lost. I'll have to grab and old, old version from my back ups.
Thanks for your help, buddy. Sorry to waste your time.
You didn't waste my time Ron, always happy to help where it helps :)
( I think you might have wasted your own a bit tho - it happens )
Only Egg could answer that Ron.
I'll give you a clue.
Go to the Talkgraphics home page www.talkgraphics.com
I know you use FireFox, so press Ctrl+U
This will show you the HTML source used by vBulletin.
Under the head section & under the meta lines you will see what vbulletin uses for the tg favicon.
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />
TG's favicon.ico is in the root folder (yours is in the /index_html_files/ folder) and your icon has another name (recmgmflag.ico)
Other than this, it is a 100% working in all browsers example which you can follow and guarantee success.
But you must follow all the rules and not make any mistake.
Remember Internet Explorer cannot use any other bitmap format than .ico
Ok. I did. I copied and pasted the code into my placeholder with my information:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/index_htm_files/bdicon.ico" />
YEAAAHHHH! IT WORKS!
See, even a moron can do something given a thousand chances.:O
Thank you STEVE!
I thought you lived in Rialto, California not Argentina?
LOL! The closest I've been to Argentina is Baja California. Cabo San Lucas and there abouts.
