CorelDraw is a vector program,
it not work like photoshop.
You can’t Feather the edges of your pics.
Go see and try the Bitmap menu,
there’s a lot of filter, like blur, etc.
that you can apply to your pics.
For your programs crashes,
forget Windows 95/98/ME.
Format completely your computer,
install Windows2000 Service Pack 3
or Windows XP with all the patches,
and then, install your programs
with all their patches too.

If you like this kind of effects, maybe you should try Xara X. It's a terrific little program with excellent vector and bitmap capabilities.
Try it out www.xara.com

First, it would help to know which version of Corel you are using. Second, which OS? Third, what kind of feathering are you talking about? There is a simple method for feathering but do you mean ragged edges, paintbrush like strokes, etc.? How are you trying to add a gradient background?
Give us some details. I've used Corel on W98se and W2K and have done both of the things you mention without crashing.
