I'm gonna practice this...mainly because I've read it twice and still don't get it. Needs a hands on learning curve methinks. It's also the same as handdrawn said I believe.

I edited my comments.
indeed, personally I would not do this in xara when a bitmap program such as SAI or corel painter can preserve transparency and all you need to do is paint over [ I have not tried the one your daughter used] - but it can be done in xara if you don't have the other softwareQuote:
My daughter dropped it into Medibang and simply 'painted' a colour on then smudged it. A lot simpler and very effective.
Feel free to fix the gaps.
just playing around with fill and transparency type

[but the trace was done in illustrator, not xara's strong point]
there are probably other ways this can be done
handrawn, twice I spelt your name incorrectly, sorry. Feel free to go all medieval on me if I do it again.
Medibang, SAI, FireAlpaca...all painting programs of a similar ilk. SAI was her favourite for a long time, then she moved to Medibang for some unknown reason.
I have a folder full such graphics in png and was working out the best way to attack them if the need arose.
no worries, it happens more than you might think the dd, and I would be the last should complain about others spelling :D
