Choosing a Graphic Tablet. Can somebody help me a little?

Hi people again, after so much time.
I had been very busy with the job & the studies, but now I have returned to make designs with my old graphic Tablet.

I have a TB-7300 Trust Graphic tablet since 2007 (4000lpi, 1024 pressure levels) , but now it's failing more than a little.

Well, I'm sad but I suppose that 5 years is a good retirement age for a graphic tablet. Now I'll have to buy another tablet and I wonder if you could help me to do it.

Do I buy another Trust Tablet or Should I bet for Wacom this time?

I have been watching this "cheap" models.

I know of only two real reasons to have a graphics tablet:

1] You are a serious freehand artist and/or calligrapher

2] You prefer using one as a pointing device [because you find it more natural, easier on the grip, or whatever.. than a mouse] for some if not all of the time

plus the touch buttons and gestures can be useful, but not enough that I'd say they were a reason to get one just for that

........

if 1] applies then the choice is a personal one

if only 2] applies then any decent make of tablet should suffice

as it happens I have a wacom bamboo, and I like it - it does the basic function very well of drawing pressure sensitive lines, and that's all I really need

I have a Genius tablet and I like it and use it a lot. One thing you can do is have a look at what is available at local stores and see if they have any display models that you can try.

I went yesterday to one store to see them, but they were no exposed, just in box.

I'll probably go for Wacom, there's a lot of people who tell me that wacom tablets are better than others, but I would need to see and touch them.

P.D.-My reason to have a tablet is the first one,Handrawn. I'm young but serious designer (or that's what I try :) ). I won't put here my resumè, but in summary, I've been working designing backgrounds and characters for e-learning video games, and some other graphics for short films and full websites design.

I can't speak much for other brands but I do enjoy my XP-Pen tablets. I have a XP-Pen Deco Pro Medium Graphic Tablet at work , it’s pretty big ( 11 x 6 inch active area ) and has 8 shortcut keys. Support Pen tilt and pressure .

I would highly recommend, whatever brand you're looking into, GET THE BIGGEST ONE that you're able to (price, desk space, transportability, etc.). A large tablet works much closer to 1:1 hand movement to screen space movement, making you more accurate.

this is an old thread and things have moved on a bit

I now have a cintiq as well and yes for the detail work big is better

But the small tablet intuos is portable - also, if you make short fast strokes on it they move a long way on the computer screen, which is very useful for expressive lines
