Mostly Truespace 3.2, with some help from PSP, RealDraw, and XaraX. The starfield was made using PSP and Uleads Particle plug-in. RealDraw was used to make a circle and exported as an esp file. Imported the circle into Truespace and used the sweep tool to make the top part of the saucer. Applied a texture then rendered to a tga file. Imported tga into XaraX and added some details, then exported as a jpg. Used the jpg to texture the saucer shape again. Copied the saucer and then matched the flat sides together. Used a few cubes to make the thrusters. Used a few spheres to make the planet with an atmosphere. Planet texture was made in PSP. Rendered several views to tga files which were then imported into XaraX to assemble the final image.
Spent a total of 14 hours working on it. Mostly working to get the shapes to line up correctly in Truespace. Still working on figuring out the best way to move, rotate, and scale objects http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

great image. I like the shiny 'dome' on the saucer. The background is perfect. The lighting is good - at least for my non sci-fi eyes. Reason: I can see all details of the object. In most cases starships from artists feature a dark surface to give it a more powerful or threatening look (I will never understand why). Maybe it's like in the western movies: the good guys had light colored clothes, while the bad guys had dark colors or black. The old 'good guy - bad guy' scheme ;-}
This is a saucer I would welcome or at least not fear to encounter.

Nice job. Keep on getting better with TrueSpace.

Jens, Gary, Randy.
Since reading Gary's lessons, I've enjoyed working with Truespace. I bought the upgrade to version 4 (can't afford the version 5 or 6 at this time) and it should arrive later this week. Verson 4 includes nurbs and bones. I'm not sure what nurbs are http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif but I think working with bones will be good for making figures of people.

NURBS are Non Uniform Rational B-Splines, which translates into 3D vectors. In XARA you draw vectors in 2D, and in Truespace (among others) you can generate volumetric objects - meaning solids and surfaces - with vectors in all 3 dimensions.
You'll love it!

Jens, thanks for the information about NURBS. They sound like they will be great fun!
Thanks Mike, I'm working my way up to doing a Star Trek starship http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I've modeled a star trek spaceship long time ago. If you are interested, I can send you the file, though I don't know which formats TrueSpace can handle for imports. Even if you can import it only as a polygon object, it might help you to get a feeling for 3D???
See pic below.

trueSpace can export to DXF.
Nice starship!
My Best,

export DXF - but what about import formats?
Nice starship? Oh no, it definitely lacks creativity and imagination, because I'm not the sci-fi specialist (though I like some sci-fi movies). It's a world I'm not comfortable with, and it doesn't have the logic I need to be creative. Example: most starships have an inferior hull design, with gazillions of nut, bolts, beams etc, but I think modern technology will produce sleek and smooth surfaces. Sure, there is no air in space which might have impact on these add-ons, but cosmic dust might tear off all those unnecessary antennas, beams, bridges and the nine yards. At least in my humble opinion on technology.
All this stuff makes as much sense to me as an extra set of support wheels for my offroader - the next tree or ditch will kill them...
;-}

I like the use of the smaller images giving a feeling of the ship moving along on it's journey!!
I like the texture you used on the ship, looks right and looks natural!!
My only thing is the planet looks a bit flat to me!
Glad you are progressing with your work in 3D!!

You learn more when you are having fun eh Soquili http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
jens they use nuts bolts indents grime etc to get a tasty specular return,just like bevellng an edge so it does not look just really sharp.
For me its the non grimy super clean surfaces on some models which are the hardest to mimick because you cannot rely on much diffusion or bump so you have to nail the modelling or it wont look right.

Very fun looking projects indeed... super job on the working with Gare's tuts and bringing things to this stage... indeed, as Stu has suggested... once ya begins to have fun... well... you know http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Thanks Richard, Stu, and Gidget.
I'm working on a new starship, along the lines of Star Trek. I haven't designed the warp nacelles and support struts yet. The red "dog house" shapes on the outer rim are thrusters, heavier duty than normal thrusters for maneuverability in event of Borg attacks. Brassy looking shapes are escape pods.
Please let me know what you think of this one. Also, who knows what side the navigational warning lights are correctly located. Is green on Starboard or Port side?

green/starboard/right.... red/port/left.... all the longer words belong on one side, and the shorter together for the other side http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Looking very nice indeed... almost expect the camera to zoom in to the crew... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
