Epyminia, welcome to TalkGraphics.
The HTML <marquee> Tag is deprecated in HTML5 as it was often buggy.
This CSS solution is directly applied to a Xara Text Column or Area without any need to use Placeholders, so avoiding HTML.
The CSS could be put into a placeholder for easy use across different designs.

You can change the speed (10s == 10 seconds) and the direction as well as the width and position of the text.
You can also include shapes with a Name htmlclass="Marquee".

Hi Acorn, many thanks for your speedy reply.
Unfortunately it is not quite what I am hoping for. I want to place a lengthy descriptive text article on a page and enable the viewer to scroll through it at their own pace, perhaps even going backwards if necessary.
Very amusing to see your text scrolling sideways and I will certainly have a play with it when the pressure eases.
Cheers

E, try this: Attachment 133921
Here is a rework of my first that doesn't scroll "sideways": Attachment 133920.
If you hover, it stops.

Or as a simpler method. just using a placeholder to load another html page.
DEMO
Thanks chaps,
There is obviously more to Xara than meets the I
In this particular case I think that the Egg solution is closer to my requirements.
But I'll doodle with both...
E
Egg, your solution suits me fine.... although there is still one fly in the ointment!
Your Demo works just great, however when I try, the vertical scrolling is good but I always have an unwanted horizontal slider bar at the bottom of the text.
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong or not doing right?

Reduce the width of the webpage that's loaded by the placeholder Epyminia.
One other advantage of this method is that if you publish this page to a sub-directory you only need to republish that single page, not the complete site.
Sorry Egg, the sophistication of your last instruction is lost on me (slow and slowing down learner) but thanks a million for sorting the scrolling text issue.
E, another way is to add a new page to your design file then change its width, keeping all others as they are.
The width of your Placeholder should be this page width and enough for the width of the vertical scrollbar.
If you do not widen it enough, you will get the horizontal scrollbar too.
All Egg was suggesting was publish the text separately in a different design file.
The advantage of this would be to allow you to change it without republishing the main design.
Proviided the filename of the first page is not index and different from any other pages, you can publish into the same root folder as the main website.
Keeping it in the one design is simpler and probably safer as a first step.

Thanks Acorn,
Believe it or not, I had worked that out for myself! different width texts for mobile and desktop versions...
