How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
This is what I'm trying to achieve:
I've already created a seamless tile that is 4"x4".
From that tile I'm trying to create a square of 20"x20" that's also seamless in Xara.
So the final image will be a seamless 20"x20" square.
Squares with edges that don't have exact matches is what I'm getting now when I resize the tiles inside the large square.
The 20"x20" size is just an example, It can have different sizes (10x10, 30x30, etc).
Any suggestion is welcome!

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I reckon your dimensions are wrong. Do check your tiles do not have a Line width.
Also use Snap to Objects.

This is the base tile, which is 2"x2":

This is what I get when I resize it inside the 20"x20" square. make a copy of the square and use snapping to put the 2 squares together:

The result is a non-seamless square.

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
You're definitely scaling something wrongly.
The base 2" x 2" tile is okay ... It doesn't seem to have a line width, although it does have a grey line on the left hand side, which comes through in the repeat.
Scaling this up to 20" x 20", you should get a 10 x 10 repeat so something is really screwy with your tiling/scaling. If you're resizing the base 2" x 2", then your resize is off somewhere.
For me it repeats like this at 8" x 8"

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
What were the steps you used to achieve that result? especially how did you resize the base tile inside the 8"x8" square?
-
Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
the simple way to see if your 2 in by 2 in works is to set your program nudge to 2 inches, clone the tile and then nudge the clone - do they line up - they do, but as keith said there is grey line visible which is a flaw in the tile fill - also, the tile must not have an outline yours do not so that is ok
I would be tempted to build up the pattern this way and then crop it to the size I wanted
if you are syncing it to an existing square, make sure the square is fill only and no outline, use the coordinate x/y values on the select tool info bar as reference, that way you may not even need to snap
if you resize the tile itself enter actual [identical] values for hight and width, do not rely on percentages etc

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I forgot to explain that I'm using the bitmap fill to create the pattern.
This is what I did:
1- imported the base tile
2- created a 20"x20" square (without outlines)
3- select the square and applied the bitmap fill as a "repeating tile" and used CTRL + image handles to resize the tiles while keeping the same width and length ratio.
I didn't use the method of snapping many base tiles to create a larger square.
-
Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I would not do that - I would make a vector shape the same size as the base tile [ eg copy the base tile and then intersect it with a larger rectangle]
I would apply the base tile to this vector shape, no need to mess about resizing and risking inaccuracy
I would then build up the larger shape in the way I mentioned before...
EDIT - forgive me you do not need to do the intersect - just do it with the base tile; in xara there is no difference between a bitmap filled shape and a bitmap

like so - once you have done one row of horizontal base tiles, group it, then you can clone the row in one go and nudge down

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I took the 2" x 2" tile and snapped copies to it originally.
However, just adding the 2" x 2" tile to the drawing anywhere: Draw 8" x 8" square: Add fill: Change fill to the picture bitmap: Change to repeating: Adjust fill handles: I cannot make the fill not seamless whatever I do. Using Shift I can distort it. but it's still seamless.

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
certainly should work
I have an adversion to resizing fills unless there is no other [practical] choice, just me I guess; probably the animator in me baulks at resizing something 'on the hoof' - if it could be done by entering in absolute values numerically that might be different...

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
Ric, to create a seamless tile-fill, assuming the tile is correct, make a 10"x10" box.
With that selected, in the Bitmap Gallery, right-click on the tile and pick Apply as fill.
This make a single tile fill all the box.
Switch to the Fill tool and change to Repeating tile and then set the Bitmap resolution back to 96dpi (or whatever the original image's dpi is).

You will now have 5x5 tiling in your box.
If you use @handrawn's method, select all the tiles, group them and make sure you have this set to render as a single image using Group web export.

You have to hold the CTRL while you move the handles to keep the ratio.

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
Let me just say this: I know how to create a base tile without outlines and use it in a large square to create a pattern in Xara (bitmap fill + repeating pattern, resize the pattern inside the square if needed, etc.).
My question is about how to make the final square that's seamless too.
This image explains what I'm saying:
https://ibb.co/fxyM1GM
I tried to multiply the base title of 4"x4" by 5. So I thought that a 20"x20" square would be an exact size to create a large square keeping the seamless aspect of the original tile.
That didn't work.

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
out of interest - is the one in the xara file I posted up seamless... I think it is... [post #9]

If you are dragging the fill with Ctrl+Drag, you are relying on your eye and judgement when to stop.
You will rarely get the 20"x20" tile seamless like that.
I chose 10"x10" on purpose as I then put four together seamlessly with Snap to Objects.

yes you can also do it that way, but I am a simple soul, I might even want to break it apart again ;)
and forgive me once again for not thinking like a website builder; good point about the group web export should that be the requirement...

yes indeed, it was rhetorical question...
there is the flaw in the base tile supplied of course, but it is seamless, I have made my fair share of seamless tiles these past few years...

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
The base tile that you used must have been changed by the website I used to share the image. If you take a look at the last picture that I posted you can see that inside the large square, there are no lines.
https://ibb.co/mB0byVM
Thank you, guys!
I'll read all the posts again and try to figure out what I should do!
I knew that snapping the base tiles could work but I was trying to use a feature that's built-in (the repeating pattern option).

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I think you will find that there are, but you cannot see the gaps on the page in the links you post because the page background is 'masking' them
when I down load the image there are vertical gaps
but look - that has no bearing on the methodology - as long as the tile, is symmetric, it will tile

Doing this will make it almost impossible to make a seamless tile as you're changing the dpi.
Keep the dpi to the original dpi and set the larger square multiples of the original tile size.
Could I ask why you'd want a 20in x 20in seamless tile in the first place?

It could be another number like 8in x 8in, 12in x 12in, etc. I was just trying to create a large-size pattern that was seamless.
The base tile that I had was 4in x 4in, and a 20in x 20in square would be an ideal size (4x5).

just checking but what do you mean by 20in x 20in square ... (4x5) ?

now I am fussy, in animation you have to be, maybe this does not matter to Ric and accepting this, it still tiles ok for me and for others....

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
Lines in patterns are an old bug that's been around for years. That's a distraction from my question.
Adobe Illustrator
HOW TO REMOVE WHITE LINES FROM PATTERNS IN ILLUSTRATOR

Inkscape
Seamless Patterns Have Fine Lines In Between Tiles
https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/114823
The lines may be a bug or the quality of the base tile, but that's not what I'm asking here. :)
-
Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
lines - yes it's an anti-alias thing - best to work in open GL - or in xara in 'full colour' view quality if you want to avoid it - that is not a bug, it is a consequence of how renderers work - I can make it work that way without issues in harmony
as for the question, that has been answered in this thread regarding seamless tiling in xara has it not ?
-
Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I used an old program called Patternshop to explain what I was trying to do in Xara.
1- In this image, you see the base tile and 2 patterns created from that tile. The 2 patterns are exactly the same
https://ibb.co/3hp4Q2W
2- When placed together the 2 patterns (A and B) are seamless:

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
That (#2) isn't seamless.
You have a small seamless tile, why are you trying to create a large seamless tile from it. It's causing issues that shouldn't exist.

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
Thanks for all the replies, and suggestions!
I hope this thread helps someone!

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
I don't see the lines between tiles in Xara. It happens when the file is exported as a PNG.
It's a famous old bug that's been around for many years in images created in Illustrator and Inkscape etc. I called it a bug because I don't think it can be called a "feature".
That can be fixed by changing the settings in Illustrator.
The bug is shown in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFfL0mwTwDM

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
Ric, I think you're missing my point. You have a perfect small seamless tile, no joins created by misplacement, anti-aliasing or anything else. Nothing to do with creating a perfect seamless tile. Having done that you seem to be messing them up creating larger seamless tiles that don't tile seamlessly.

Then just cut your tile in Xara with a 0px line width or a shape with no line.
Always set the the dimension to be whole pixels, 2" = 192px, which is fine.

Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
Here is a seamless tile. You can fit it to any shape of any size and it seams perfectly. Why create a larger seamless tile. If you do just ensure your shape is in multiples of the tiles original shape.
-
Re: How to create a seamless pattern from a seamless tile?
interesting video Ric but I don't think you understand the process the lady is describing otherwise you would not keep calling this a bug
a bug is something that should not happen for a given process - what we have here is something you do not expect to happen, but which neverthless is a consequence of what was done
the 'fix' is merely using the correct settings to tell PS how to anti-alias the tile for the tiling
