RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
I have a web site that is 72 pages long. In it I call several .pdf files.
When I publish the Web site, Xara creates a directory containing the names of those .pdf files for downloading (RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES).
My problem:
RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Contains the names of only 17 different .pdf files
I actually call 84 different .pdf files in the website.
I am then forced to manually upload all of the missing .pdf files to the web site using cPanel File Manager in order for the web site to work properly (no missing file 404 error when attempting to call the missing .pdf file).
Is this a known "bug"?
Is it fixed in a future release?
What Release?

Re: RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
How did you link to the PDF files that are missing?
And are the missing PDF files in the same location on your computer that they were when you linked to them at first?
Also, is your home page index.htm or index.html? I ask because the folder Xara creates on publish is usually named index_html_files.

I moved this thread and your other post to the Xara Web Design Chat forum.

Re: RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
Wodlik, I would Export Website to a local folder and examine the contents of ronks_kitchen_web_files there.
Are you sure the folder name is capitalised.
If your first page filename is ronks_kitchen, the Xara support folder would be lowercase ronks_kitchens_htm_files.
If you have put all your PDFs separately into a RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES folder then any linkage to a PDF will have Xara add it into its support folder and not upload RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES folder and contents.
You other error message issue may be related to the design file size and what else is using memory at the time you are uploading.
To get a fuller answer, we will need:
- Published web address
- Design File size
- First page filename

Web Properties
Link To File (PDF, AVI, etc.)
I use the Browse button to select the file location in a sub-directory (Which never changes).
The home page in Xara is named: index
On the uploaded Web Site it is named: index.htm
I have several sub-directories in my website (due to it's large size). Each of those sub-directories has its own unique index.htm
in every case, Xara creates a file named: RonK's_Kitchen_Web_Files that contains a shortened list of the .pdf files i called.
Remember, I am using Xara 11.2.5.42127 64 bit.

Re: RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
My Web Site: ronkskitchen.com
My Xara file name: RonKs_Kitchen.web
File size varies, each up to about 105k.
First page is always named index.

Questions concerning new Xara V19:
Is it a yearly subscription of a forever one like my current V11?
Is there a directory somewhere on-line where I can find lists of bug fixes in V12 through V19? There are several personal "Bugs" I would like to see if they are fixed. The main being "Sticky" Menu's that are longer in length than the screen displaying that drop-down menu. If I make the menu character size small enough to display fully on ANY device, it becomes too tiny to accurately select the correct choice.
Another is Xara drop down menus that are NOT sorted alphabetically. Many (Names, etc.) are sorted in the order they were created in, making finding an already used name difficult.
Does V19 have the ability to create a website Search Menu?
Does V19 have the ability to create a viewer comments section?
Does V19 have the ability to create its own page visitor counter? I have roughly 35 sub-directory index.htm files that are linked to from the main website index.htm file. I want to create a page counter for each of those 35 individualfiles seems taking advantage of people that give free Page Visitor Counters on-line.

Wodlik, thank you for this detail.
I have the same v11 build and this is the process Xara handles external assets.
You are linking to a local filestore folder that can be named anything.
Perhaps in the past you saved your design as Ron's_Kitchen.web and then found RonK's_Kitchen_Web_Files and you assumed this was where all your PDFs needed to be. Whatever you call your PDF folder, and where it is, is irrelevant.
When you pick a local PDF file using Link to file and press OK or Apply, Xara creates a subfolder in %localappdata%\Temp\XaraTempSupportFolders\.
This sub-folder has a random name like, 3a9dcdbf-08a0-4843-afb1-8d9ecffadea1_files, which will be tied to your design file so it knows where the PDF is stored.
On Preview, the external assets are added into the index_htm_files folder.
When you saved your design, as Ronk's_Kitchen.web, it also creates a new folder Ronk's_Kitchen_web_files and your PDF(s) will be in that folder and the XaraTempSupportFolders\3a9dcdbf-08a0-4843-afb1-8d9ecffadea1_files\ folder is purged and deleted.
What you are probably doing is using the same design filename for each sub-section thinking all the PDFs will then appear in the RonK's_Kitchen_web_files folder but what you are actually doing is replacing the previous one with the current.
What you need to do is place all your PDFs in a local filestore folder, probably by <topic> sub-folder grouping.
Each design file needs to have its own unique filename; you can follow a regime of Ron's_Kitchen_<topic>.web.
Each design file will now have its own external asset folder Ron's_Kitchen_<topic>_web_files.
When you publish, each server sub-folder will now have its own ..\<topic>\index.htm page with its own ..\<topic>index_htm_files folder containing the correct PDF files.
<topic> being airfryers, appetizers, ...

Wodlik
v19 is perpetual two installs per licence.
Dropdowns for Names are alphabetical.
Do try the trial.
Search, Comments and Visitor Stats are typically server-side code as Xara has notserver connectivity.
Search can be done locally, I did something on this - look in https://www.talkgraphics.com/tags.php?tag=nugget.
Comments would require server scripting, MySQL & PHP typically. You could use a simple Blog.
Avoid Visitor Stats Widgets on the page, the visitor doesn't care. Use something like Cloudflare's free offerings.

Thank you for the info......
V19 sounds good
I will give the Trial a go shortly.
i agree that visitors could give a rat about visitor counts. I would make the counter invisible on the page (I do care about the number of visitors to each section)

Re: RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
Does V19 also fix my sticky menu problem where the number of menu items in the drop-down box exceeds the height of the device displaying that menu so the lower choices are off-screen? Making the menu "not sticky" does allow it to scroll with the page, but I can't click on one of the choices since the drop-down box disappears too quickly. Is there a way to set a time that the menu remains on-screen allowing for selection of the bottom most menu choices?

Here is how I would manage your desktop menu transition to a mobile variant: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/navbar_variant/
You have 4 Xara standard menus, much like a quick reference guide to the site's content. Each of these can be posted to a popup layer on your mobile variant where, provided the width of the menu is no greater than the width of the mobile variant, it will display correctly. From there, you can adjust Xara standard submenu font sizes as required. For the mobile variant each section (Xara menu) is called from the MouseOff page:
Attachment 132351
If the length of a dropdown were to exceed the length of the page, and that is the issue, there is another way of creating a list of links as a page-within-a-page; in this case you have the list page within an iframe and a vertical scroll bar. There are other ways too of addressing this challenge.
v19 uses a Scale-to-fit-Width (introduced with v16.3) - with the example site above you can squeeze a desktop browser to see how the site will appear on different devices; it should be consistent.
You would probably need at least v16.3 to see this working: Attachment 132352
Should you choose to look at the v19 trial, you could open up the attached file and see how it is constructed.
From a design perspective, I did think it should be possible to condense the 4 Xara Navbar's into one, but that's without fully understanding the structure of your site.

Ron, I had to play around with the concept of a stickie menu taller than its viewing height.
If you make it not stickie and set the pop-up to not close automatically, then it won't close until you click on the Close icon.
There are other tricks where you affix the phrase (lock) to the Layer name; this a summary Thread: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...close-png-icon.
A possible cleaner alternative that you already have is to have a menu icon opening a separate menu page - totally scrollable.
Your site is clearly a labour of love, which I applaud.
When I looked at it years back, the one downside I felt was the scanned images.
Still don't see where any PDFs are hiding.

Re: RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
@ Acorn & Ron,
Where you have a very long list of links, like a quick reference guide to all sections and pages across a large site, maybe you could have separate lists of links on separate pages, but display them through an iframe on the page being viewed.
Example: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/iframe-links/
The list pages could be shared with any variants which should make them easier to maintain across the site.
Just a thought, though I have not fully tested the process.

Re: RONKS_KITCHEN_WEB_FILES Directory Missing .pdf Files Problem
I downloaded & Installed V19 trial version.
if I make the menu not stickie, it gets moved to the Mouse On Layer from the Mouse Off layer & disappears. I have to manually cut & paste it back into the Mouse Off layer to see it again.
I have not been able to find where I can change the menu pop-up to not close automatically. Where is that option selected at?
The .pdf printable images are stored in the public_html/appetizers/index_htm_files directory for each of the individual directories (appetizers, coffees, hungarian, seafoods, soups, etc.) Using cPanel File Manager to upload the files isn't really a problem.
LOL - I eventually "discovered" that scanned images in color @300 DPI will print/display VERY POORLY, but, if they're scanned in Greyscale @300 DPI, the print/viewing quality is MUCH better.......
The end result is that I have basically started completely over last February.
The main reason for this project is that I am 80 years old & my father died from Alzheimer's. This is actually an attempt to keep my brain active and (hopefully) keep the Alzheimer's beastie away, although "senior moments" do bite my ass occasionally.

Point [1] - Your sticky menu (buttons) do correctly appear on the home page of your website, but they are partially obscured as the page content scrolls underneath them. You need to create a sticky (full width is an option) rectangle that sits behind the menu links; the colour of the rectangle is your choice, but white works OK
Point [2] - When you select your popup you will see a settings tab to the right, click on this and you will see a checkbox that you can un-tick to stop the popup closing automatically; when you view the popup you will see a standard Xara close button that is required to close that popup.
Hopefully the graphic helps:

When I Open the Web Properties - Link Tab for one of my Menu Buttons and click on the Pop-up Layer Radio Button, The dropdown list is completely empty, there is no Pop-Up choice to select.
Also
At the bottom of the Web Properties Box, there is no "Clickable Area box nor are the two Radio Buttons there.
I just upgraded to Xara V19.0.0.64291 from the original V19.0.0.63990

Gary, no, still the Xara method.
The empty javascript ensures the normal click action is passed to open the sub-menu. The aria statement is for Accessibility notification, which is probably recently added.
I have badgered Xara about Accessibility for a fair time so it's good to see it happen.
My Xara NavBar approach might be to open a popup that itself has a MouseOver layer so a popped-up NavBar could be shown. This itself could be repeated.
The complication is there are 1,600 recipes so 1,600 menu entries.
Cleaner would be to have an IFRAME to the PDF picture and recipe combined. The current recipe images can dropped.
Each recipe page would have this construct and would show the rating detail and the highlight description.
I would then create a chapter page that itself has an IFRAME whose contents are presented when one of the chapter entries is clicked.
You then just have a NavBar to each chapter page.
A lot of work, probably better suited to WordPress or xtom's CMS.

Thanks Acorn for the Accessibility update; not seen it in Xara Pro X v19 before, but understand popups work the same way as before. I think for the time being Ron might have to live with amending existing popups, with the exception of the home page where you could create a just one popup and reorder it in categories/chapters or alphabetic order. A great collection of recipes.

Ron, appreciated; the detail was more for Gary to get his head round.
The trick is the best, scalable approach to listing, indexing and finding a recipe.
I would also think a search mechanism to cover ingredients would be very useful.

OK
What I have "discovered" is: Sticky Menu Bars created in Sticky Text Boxes under V11 will not work properly when I re-generate the V11 website using V19. I have to create an entirely new Sticky Menu Bar in V19 for it to display like you guys said it would.
What I have Decided to temporarily create two to four different Sticky Menu Bars, each with its own portion of the website pages for web indexes that contain more than 20 different recipes. (18px Text for Desktops & 8px Text for Smartphones).
Future Release Request: Sticky Menu Bar Drop Down Box - The drop down box position in relation to the Sticky Menu Bar position depends upon where in the top of the page the Sticky Menu Bar is Located. Sometimes when the drop down Box opens, it expands to the right of the Menu Bar and other times it expands to the left (I've not figured out what the determining factors are - yet). It does not matter whether I have the Justification "Left", "Center" or "Right" Radio Buttons selected, it has no effect upon the display position within the page on-line.
It would be nice if: No matter where along the top of the page the Sticky Menu Bar is physically located, the drop down box always appeared centered horizontally in the page, no matter what the page width actually is (Desktop, Notebook, Smartphone, etc).
I have created a workaround (sort-of) by inserting more than one Sticky Menu Bar at the top of my recipe section pages.
See:
http://www.RonksKitchen.com/index.htm
To see an example. It works kind of OK in Device Landscape Mode, but still has several problems in narrower device Portrait Mode.
Thanks for all of your efforts
Ron.

Ron, I am guessing that you are building these menus as HTML <table> Tags and adding to a Placeholder body that is on its own Layer.

The drop-down box position in relation to the Sticky Menu Bar position depends upon where in the top of the page the Sticky Menu Bar is Located.
This is likely where a designer is either using a standard Xara NavBar example here : https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/navbar_variant/ (desktop and mobile). OR > this is how the original menu system was designed in the first place.
The standard Xara submenu can be offset but cannot be positioned completely independently. Where a designer opts to build their own NavBar, perhaps a link to open a popup menu, this can be positioned on the page to suit the design.

This is simply a consequence of a browser trying to best fit a window into the browser width. I can see the issue with your site; it can happen with a standard Xara submenu too. With Xv19 you have the option of exporting a site with an option of Scale-to-fit-Width and most of the time the random positioning of a submenu can be avoided.
Here is an example that positions the dropdown menu in the centre of the page; it also accommodates any number of links; the latter avoids a links window exceeding the page height.
https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/list-Test/ > it works across desktop and mobile
There are no doubt many ways to address the issues, but hopefully by example this shows just one way of doing it with the current version of Pro Xv19.

Thanks for all your work in this. I have MUCH to ponder over here.
Unrelated (kind-of) Question
I cut/copy and paste similar pages in order to save time.
Is there any way to delete:
Unused "Link To Anchor" entries in the Drop-Down Choice entries?
The same for "Names" and "Paragraph Styles"?
Thanks Ron
